A women’s yoga and fell walking break in the Welsh borders leaves our writer with aching muscles but a heart full of joy

Arrived in Reggio Calabria down the spine of the Apennines. What a glory journey of constant surprise through Calabria’s mountains and national parks with black pine pollen smoking the air, cherries and warm figs, barely any traffic and that’s Sicily across the water.

Biking Calabria: hills and more hills; wild flowers; ancient abandoned medieval towns; eating like kings.

Llanbedr to Blaenavon Fell Race 2024. Some stellar performances in challenging conditions. Grassroots fell running at its best. Thank you from my heart to all my marshals on summits in horizontal sleet and sub zero temps for 3 hours!

With none of the bureaucracy and expense associated with the reintroduction of native wildlife, hundreds of non-native pheasants have been released near to our farm. They are now eating our 'crop' ('crop' being defined as biodiversity). In what world does this make any sense?

They cost £400 a pair. Designed to be used once 😳. “We’ve gone from a sport where essentially all you needed 20 years ago was a pair of trainers and a vest, to where the footwear has essentially been weaponised quite substantially. ”

Halifax to home in Abergavenny by bike. 309km, 3 days. Lots of traffic free routes. What a joy and how fascinating to piece the geography of the country together in this way.

Conversations on the Land Weekend and A LOT of chat, learning and inspiration. And I did not think I’d need my WATERPROOF SOCKS, two coats and waterproof trousers in July. #pleasecanwehavesummerback

A few years ago we started managing a piece of steep upland ground for diversity - and particularly for flowers. From sheep-cropped nothingness when we took it over, it’s now happening 💥👊

Full frames of honey already; cycling over Gospel Pass in a vest and warm strawbs from the garden - bit of a summer going on here.

Got back to Brum from Greenland, then was burgaled while sleeping. All camera gear, laptops, cards, passports, taken. My lovely van too: crucial to kayak trips & full of gear. It's distinctive, so if anyone near spots this grey VW Transporter with kayak racks please get in touch!

I’d forgotten how good for the soul a long bike journey is: 8 days trans-Sardinia under our own steam; incredible wild nature, challenging uncertainty, delightful surprises and oddly quite a lot of rain while the U.K. basks in sun!
