Just stopping by to remind folks that
@KamalaHarris
started her career as a local elected official in San Francisco and
@JoeBiden
started his career by running for the New Castle County Council. That is why it's so important to focus up AND down the ticket.
Something that gets lost in the policy debate is that the moderate wing of the Democratic Party is more radical in their approach than progressives. Not a single progressive lawmakers has tried to hold Biden's agenda hostage. Moderates have done it every step of the way.
In six weeks he’s spent about 3x
@runforsomething
’s yearly budget. With that amount of money we’ve recruited 30K + who are interested in running, supported 900+ state/local candidates, and helped elect well over 200.
Tom Steyer has spent $12 million on digital and TV ads in only 6 weeks — more than any other Democrat has spent all year. Whether he can become something more than the billionaire buying ads about how "our democracy has been purchased” is an open question.
THREAD: There are a lot of takes, so figured I'd add another. We didn't win in quite the way we wanted to both up and down the ballot. That is understandable because we built significant expectations around what was possible this year. But this deserves a deeper dive (1/?)
If you’re a candidate thinking about canvassing right now, please don’t. It’s not worth it. If you’re an org about to send canvassers out, please don’t. It’s not worth it.
Potential Medicaid expansion in Virginia is yet another reminder of why we do this work. All of the blood, sweat, and tears from orgs, vols, and candidates in VA in 2017 means that in 2018 people’s lives will be better.
The Texas six week abortion is now the law after SCOTUS refused to stop it from going into effect. Texas is also allowing partisan poll workers to intimidate voters. If you needed a reason to care about state and local elections this should be your wake up call. (1/?)
Every victory tonight against an IDC member should be considered a flipped seat. We went from having Dems in name only to having real Democrats who will caucus with our party. That is at least 6 new Dems in the NY State Senate, 50% of whom were endorsed by
@runforsomething
After reading yet another article about how Democrats need a better message I have to say: If we took 50% of the billions spent on ads over the last decade and invested that money in winning at the state/local level. Most of our problems would be solved (1/?)
Nope nope nope nope nope nope. Last night, we won big up and down the ballot in traditional Democratic strongholds and soon to be battlegrounds. Do not let yourself fall into the trap of thinking last night was a failure. It was a beginning.
The problem here isn’t that the officer is helping this person down the stairs. The problem is that if this women were Black they’d have pushed her down the stairs in handcuffs.
Exhausted and feeling positive. Dems took the house, showed we can compete in GA, AZ, and TX, flipped 7 chambers, and flipped 300+ leg seats. At
@runforsomething
at least 120 of our folks won, some in hostile areas. There’s a realignment coming, this is just the beginning.
The big wins in Arizona are because of the incredible work from folks/orgs like
@LUCHA_AZ
,
@phoenikera
,
@CasaOnTheRez
, and so many others who've been building over the last 10 plus years. That kinda of work has also been happening in GA, NC, and TX! (6/?)
Today
@runforsomething
turns six years old! So, I want to take a moment to talk about the journey. When
@amandalitman
and I launched RFS on inauguration day in 2017 we did so thinking it would be a side hustle. That if 100 candidates signed up in a year we'd be lucky!
Brian Williams on
@MSNBC
just said "if you don't like something, volunteer." At
@runforsomething
we say "if youi don't like something, RUN FOR SOMETHING!"
If you’re in Georgia and live in a district with a GOP state legislator, think about running for office.

Breaking: Georgia House passes 95 page GOP voter suppression bill allowing GOP takeover of state/county election boards, unlimited challenges to voter eligibility, restricting drop boxes & making it crime to give voters food & water in line
We saw more success at the local level than any part of the ballot. Democrats won city councils seats, judicial races, and school board seats. These races show us that folks support Democrats and our ideas. They also show how hard it is to win on gerrymandered maps. (8/?)
We need to normalize the fact that it's unacceptable for any mainstream institution to hire someone who worked for any of Trump's campaigns, at the RNC, or inside the Administration.
We can't get stuck in a cycle where we blame certain groups of people for the election results. If folks didn't vote for us it's because we didn't give them a reason to, not the other way around. That's why we need to invest in those communities year-round! (10/?)
Regardless of what happens tonight I want to give a HUGE shout out to
@JessLivMo
who had the vision to invest early in GA in 2018 when few others would.
@CareInActionUS
is currently running the second largest IE field program in the state having knocked on over one million doors!
Four years ago if you mentioned that in 2020 we'd be: competing for TX, GA, NC, and winning AZ you'd think I was messing with you. You'd be perplexed if I told you we'd be competing for state chambers in AZ, FL, GA, MI, NC, PA, and TX. We've come a long way in a short time. (2/?)
After 2016,
@JessLivMo
picked herself up and recommitted to the work. It wasn’t unique, but it was brave. She’s a force of nature who moves mountains. She’s deserving of this recognition by time and her hero
@HillaryClinton
.
This win might be one of the sweetest of the night for me.
@Lina4HC
was just elected in my hometown. At the age of 28 she will run the third largest county in America. She is now one of the most powerful people in Texas. She is one of the smartest and toughest people i know!!!!!!
We also need to remember that until VERY recently AZ, GA, NC, and TX were all GOP strongholds. Eventually winning these states on a regular basis takes time because building infrastructure and long-term power doesn't happen overnight. (5/?)
But even with the breakthroughs of the last few years, we're going to see setbacks because organizing is hard. Because of that, we need to keep seeing the same kinds of investments in these states in 2021 and beyond. We can't just invest during the even years! (7/?)
Your morning reminder that mass death and unemployment are policy choices. They’re not inevitabilities. Congress could pass massive economic stimulus that keeps people working and solvent. States could choose to reopen safely rather than what many are doing now. (1/9)
If you're thinking about giving to the Lincoln Project you should instead give to
@runforsomething
. We recruit and support young, diverse, candidates in all 50 states. Seems like a better investment than some dude's third vacation home. Just saying.
My first TV appearance. Was so awesome to do it with
@JessLivMo
. The biggest thank you to
@AliciaMenendez
for having me. Was such an honor. Love the show. And I had so much fun.
🚨Good News Alert🚨 With results still coming in,
@runforsomething
has 175 winners! That represents more wins than in 2018 and puts us VERY CLOSE to having elected our 500th candidate since starting in 2017. Check them out on this thread. More to come!
Our first set of results are in!!
Former legislative aide and community advocate Travaris McCurdy has just won his election for the Florida State House in District 46!
This is why we need to invest in state and local elections. This is why we've been needing to do that for the last decade. If you're new to the party, welcome. If you've been here, thank you for your service.
The Democrats who voted “yes” on the CR just decided that it was okay to deport 12,000 DREAMERS whose status will expire between now and Jan. 19th when we do this all again.

Getting a little bit real this morning after seeing pictures of New York and DC this weekend. I have friends posting pictures of themselves in crowded parks having “social distancing” hang out sessions. So here’s the deal, I am obese and have asthma. I’m high risk.
SCOTUS just ruled that partisan gerrymandering is beyond reach of federal courts. This is why we need to invest resources TODAY in flipping state chambers. If we don’t, we will lose the House for a decade.
This is your "holy shit" early vote update: TX is at 94% of 2016 turnout while FL is 77%, NC is 81%, GA is 82%, and AZ is 74%. National turnout is 57% of what it was in 2016 and almost 80 million people have voted. We are on track for the highest turnout in 100 years. HOLY SHIT!
10% of first time candidates win. More than 40% of
@runforsomething
's candidates won last night. We plan to 1,000 + candidates in 2018. If 40% of them win, that is 400 young, diverse, progressive folks elected. That is how we change the game!
Our *feelings* are because we expected to do better, which came from a few things that included an epic polling failure and the fact that big wins in 2017, 2018, and 2019 all indicated that we'd win big in 2020. That was reinforced by the huge turnout and Trump being Trump. (3/?)
I'm not going to go out here and say money does not matter, it does. Field matters... it's not the only thing, but it does! A lot of things happened, and it's going to take a while to unpack, so don't listen to folks painting with a broad brush -- this shit is complicated. (12/?)
If we are going to keep doing better in these places we need to continue investing in the local powerbuilding work that we KNOW leads to victories. We need to invest in local orgs, leaders, and candidates who know their communities and aren't going anywhere. (9/?)
Tonight’s Winner: Julian Castro for crushing his performance and showing us who he really is.
Great Performances: Senators Warren and Booker.
Tonight’s Biggest Winner: The Democratic Party + America for having a substantive, forward looking, debate of ideas.
#DemDebate
I cannot tell you how many times I've heard "we really want to win this very important seat so we're going with this mediocre white man." As a party, we need to get serious about recruiting AND supporting candidates of color.
If none of the presidential candidates inspire you, then 1) make sure you still vote for the nominee and 2) put your time, energy, and money into folks running for state and local office!
I am proposing a new rule! If you're going to make a public hot take about 2020, and you played some sort of role in the election, you must first acknowledge what you specifically could've done differently. The answer CANNOT be "nothing" or "I cared too much." Who's with me?
This is the point in the night where I get real earnest. Whatever happens tonight, I am so proud of everything
@runforsomething
has done the last four years. It's been really amazing getting to work with
@amandalitman
and the entire RFS team.
Worth considering the next time you call AOC radical. What is more radical, trying to take care of people who are suffering or stubbornly refusing to do so by using disingenuous, outdated, arguments. Just saying.
It does not matter who gets elected president if we don’t take control of state house chambers ahead of 2020 redistricting. We also need state legislatures who will expand voting rights not take them away.
Today is National Run for Office Day! 🏃🏿🏃🏾♀️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏼♀️
Each of us has the potential to change our country by getting involved in the political process one seat at a time.

Some personal news (as they say): After more than seven amazing years I will be leaving

206 of our endorsed candidates won! 56% of them identify as women and about 60% are BIPOC. We didn't do everything we wanted, but we're in WAY better shape than we were in 2011 and 2017!
Don't get it twisted folks. Anyone saying that Jen O'Malley Dillon doesn't care about the ground game has no clue what they're talking about. She's literally one of the architects of President Obama's ground game in 2008 and 2012 and her background is as an organizer.
If Democrats spent as much money on state and local races as we do on the US Senate not only would Dems have the Senate today, we'd also have controlled redistricting across the country and we'd be talking about a permanent Democratic majority.
Would love to see a question about gerrymandering, the important of state and local elections, and what the candidates will do to build the Democratic Party. Those things are as important as the big policy issues of the day.
This is your weekly reminder that Joe Biden raised more in August than every single Democrat running for State House in 2020 combined! Remember to invest in state/local races.
Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service. They deserve your vote:
One of the reasons we started Run for Something in 2017 is because we know how important it is to run quality candidates EVERYWHERE — in EVERY state, for EVERY office. And the midterm elections proved that when we run those candidates, we win:
Final HOLY SHIT update: TX continues to lead the nation in early vote officially hitting 100% of its 2016 turnout!!! Other states: FL at 82%, NC at 86%, GA at 87%, AZ at 80%, NV at 82%. Over 83 million ballots have been cast and nationally we're at 61% of 2016 turnout. HOLY SHIT!
This runoff is both an opportunity and a challenge to Democrats. 2022 doesn’t have to be a bloodbath. It can look like what just happened in GA. If we want to win we must keep organizing and our electeds need be bold. Half-measures won’t cut it, we need to get big shit done.
The NRA is literally killing our children. It’s time to show the door to legislators who are bought and paid for by the NRA.

An issue is that Trump wasn't on the ballot b/t 2017-2019. This also happened with Pres Obama in 2008 and 2012. In the intervening years we lost big, but when he was on the ballot we did better. Same seems to be true of Trump. When he's on he ballot, white men get stoked.(4/?)
In October of 2004 I was 19 years old. I walked into a campaign office to volunteer for a young man who had the audacity to think he could be Mayor of the 7th largest city in the US. It’s been a wild ride since! Could not be more proud of
@JulianCastro
for doing this!
As a kid growing up on the west side of San Antonio, I never thought that I’d one day be making this announcement: I’m exploring a candidacy for President of the United States in 2020 to renew the promise of this country for all.
I often hear folks say "Dems need a better message that's why we don't win." Here's the deal, we lose because we have REFUSED to invest locally and Republicans do. It's not message. It's not tactics. It's our refusal to spend strategically.
Texas Republicans are organized: This type of mobilization and recruitment in local, county-level races is not a norm across the county -- but can make a big difference in elections that often tend to draw few if any candidates.
The impact of this campaign will always be measured for me in how many new people were brought to the table, how many “I’ve never felt seen by a campaign before, but nows...” how many political and moral imaginations were expanded by the simple goal to put people first.
Not digging all the fat shaming I’ve seen here since last night, even if it is directed at Trump. The only folks you’re hurting are your fat friends who have to see you joining in.
I went on TV to do three things: 1) talk about the importance of state and local elections, 2) argue with
@JessLivMo
on TV instead of just at home, and 3) show the peeps out there what a strong sweater game looks like.
"Every single person in 2020 is going to have a candidate running for office that is NOT the president within one hour's drive of their zipcode."
Check out RFS co-founder

I am on a
@united
flight and the captain just came over the intercom and said “can we all give a cheer for the lifting of the masks, let’s see those beautiful smiles.” I understand that folks disagree on the issue, but not sure pilots should shame folks who want to wear masks.
Are you mad? I am! Here are things you can do:
1) volunteer for one of the more than 400
@runforsomething
candidates:
2) find out if running for something is right for you:
3) donate to candidates:
THREAD: Been thinking a lot about why so many have come to Kavanaugh’s defense. Think it’s pretty simple. If what Kavanaugh did was wrong + has consequences, millions of men across America are also guilty and can be held to account...
School board candidates and members, looking for something you can do on policy? Here's a great example! Also, for those who say protests don't work, this is the direct result of what a movement can accomplish!
Happening today: Minneapolis school board is voting "on a resolution that would terminate the school district’s contract with the police department to provide “school resource officers” and mandate that the superintendent prepare an alternate plan for keeping students safe."
"There are no saviors in politics; there’s not one person who’s going to do it all."
@MaxwellFrostFL
speaking truth! Building on that, we don't NEED saviors in politics. We need thousands of folks who give a shit to run to DO something not be something.
Senator Gillibrand is a remarkable person who has done so much to push the ball forward on so many issues through this campaign and her time in the Senate. She's also been an incredible ally to
@runforsomething
and the cause of getting a new generation of folks elected.
NYT reports: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York said Wednesday that she was withdrawing from the Democratic primary after failing to qualify for a third debate next month — a development she described as fatal to her candidacy.
This is dumb on its face and dumb because it's going to hurt the good actors, and benefit the bad ones who run fake media sites (on the right and left).
I know a lot of folks are looking for things to do. If you’re a candidate you can start by rejecting police union money. If you’ve already accepted it, return it.
The
@nytimes
published something I wrote, which is crazy to write. The tl;dr version is we need more not fewer folks running for office. And, we need to re-think who the gatekeepers are. Bottom line: we can't keep doing what we've been doing.

🚨MORE GOOD NEWS ALERT🚨 Still calling races, but can announce that 205 of our endorsed candidates have won their elections! That means
@runforsomething
has been a part of 500+ wins with 450+ NEW elected officials over the last four years. Stay tuned, more to come tomorrow!
Our first set of results are in!!
Former legislative aide and community advocate Travaris McCurdy has just won his election for the Florida State House in District 46!
Texas Update: A week into early vote and 51% of the 2016 total turnout has already voted. We don't really know what any of this means, so keep your foot on the gas and keep calling and texting voters!!!
A lot of us are in our *feelings* right now because we did a thing we haven’t allowed much of the last few years - we hoped. And, it turned out that there was a significant gap between our hopes and reality. That’s okay. We need to keep hoping.
We can't get stuck in an accounting of whether we won/lost bc of specific tactics. We couldn't knock on doors that def impacted the results, and we lost a lot of these seats by more than field margins. We also spent record amounts in so many districts and still lost. (11/?)
Tomorrow 525
@runforsomething
endorsed candidates will be on the ballot. Each of them has their own unique story and reason for running. They are running in red states and blue states. They are immigrants. They represent the best of us. I can’t wait to celebrate them win or lose.
Today
@runforsomething
is announcing Clerk Work, our $80 million 3-year plan to save democracy from the ground up by recruiting & supporting 5,000+ candidates for local offices in charge of election administration.
@ec_schneider
has the details:
The New York State Senate flipped from red to blue tonight, and all it took were some competitive primaries. Primary elections are healthy, we need more of them.
Every victory tonight against an IDC member should be considered a flipped seat. We went from having Dems in name only to having real Democrats who will caucus with our party. That is at least 6 new Dems in the NY State Senate, 50% of whom were endorsed by
@runforsomething
We released our strategic plan today. Some fun things:
1) More local work (city council, school board, etc)
2) More 1:1 support for candidates (regional directors)
3) Relational candidate recruitment (working with alum to recruit in their communities)
Two of the
@runforsomething
core values are to think "long-term" and be "sustainable." Next week we are rolling-out a 6 month pilot of a 4 day work week. Our COO
@CassandraGaddo
explains.
So proud of
@JCarrollFoy
and all that she’s done over the last few years whether it was fighting for foster families or passing the ERA. Also, so excited to have
@runforsomething
’s first candidate for Governor! And, congrats to
@amandalitman
for calling this three years ago.
This crisis has forced us to reckon with a truth that's been just beneath the surface: working families don’t have what they need to thrive.
Today, I'm launching my campaign for Governor of Virginia because we need a leader who won't back down in the fight for what’s right.
While Arizona and Florida are going to get most of the love tonight, don't sleep on Oklahoma. That state is going to surprise some folks in November. Congrats
@CarrieBlumert
!
One of my favorite things is when
@JessLivMo
gets recognized for her incredible work. This one is more personal than almost anything I’ve ever seen her work on. She moves mountains and won’t rest until these kids are reunited with their parents.
Been thinking a lot since election night and have a bunch of random thoughts, so here we go: 1) None of the victories in 2019 happened overnight. They happened because of sustained work, investment, and partnership over many years.
If you ever doubted that one of the biggest places we were gonna make change this cycle is at the state and local levels, here it is. Democrats flipped over 300 seats tonight! More will be called in the morning. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
Here is our 2 am roundup:
