Stay warm and cosy but stimulated this Thursday evening as our first talk of 2024 is from Paddy Lambert. He's going to be chatting about the Priors Hall Roman Villa site and how its history can be charted through the road system. Booking here:

Fancied getting out over the holiday season and nosying at some more sites. Instead, it's more just sheltering from named storms. It's got to improve soon, right?

Part of RR712 as it heads past Castleshaw Fort before climbing up to the top of the Pennines and cutting through the gritstone cap on Standedge
Many thanks to everyone who came to the @OfForts talk on Castleshaw about the #Roman Road adjacent to the forts (or not!). I think this #Lidar flyaround gives a good clue as to it location. 😉 Thanks to Norman Redhead and Tim Jeffery (and I enjoyed my bit) #RomanFortThursday

I was hoping to be able to give you a little newsy snippet about the work done on RR712 by the @OfForts Castleshaw folks and @Phil_M_Barrett after the talk this evening. Unfortunately I'm stuck in hospital but I'll winkle something out of them hopefully for the next newsletter

Plus for those in the area, our friends at Castleshaw @OfForts have a talk on Wednesday evening (15th) in Uppermill about where on earth the RR goes as it passes the fort. Includes all the good Lidar and Geophys stuff

The big bumper edition of the latest newsletter is out now. Members should have got their copy via email from Dave A. Even includes a joke this quarter, too. If you're not a member you're missing out. £16 a year, that's all. Bargain.

A very vividly-coloured #Roman glass dish - beautiful even though the pattern has gone slightly wrong in one half of it! #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientGlass

The problems, which were beyond our control, were due to temporary low bandwidth near where Nick lives, probably caused by Storm Babet. The good news is that Nick has given the talk before for the Joan Pye Lecture in 2022, and a recording is available on YouTube.

A message from our chair about last night's talk: On behalf of the Roman Roads Research Association, I would like to apologise for the poor sound quality of Nick's talk, which made the talk unwatchable for some of our audience.

Apologies for the sound issues with this evening's talk. We're not sure why - let's go with blaming the weather. We are talking to Nick about the possibility of a rescheduling, and will let you know when there is news.

"it is possible -Â indeed likely -Â that the legion was destroyed or disbanded in Britain during serious warfare in the reign of the emperor Hadrian."

If, like me, you were/are a fan of @rsutcliff 's Eagle of the Ninth, it's going to be a particularly good one. Might just have a quick reread before Thursday.

Aerial photos really are the best, aren't they?
The Roman road known as Ermine Street, the modern A15 at this point, just to the west of Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, looking north towards the River Humber and Winteringham, where the Roman settlement known as "Old Wintringham" was the crossing point to Petruria (Brough).
