We all find our own ways of paying tribute to those who gave their lives in protecting others. At this time of year we focus on past conflicts, but let us not lose sight of the conflict, pain and suffering being thrust upon so many at the current time, all around the world.

We've been going through some of the images in our photo library recently and noticed some cropmarks at grid reference SJ 61978 09046 in Shropshire. There doesn't seem to be anything on record. There was a lot of Roman activity in the area. Might it have some connection to that?

In 1947/48 aerial photographs of the area around Whitton, North Lincs, taken by the RAF, showed earthworks in this field. It is thought that the earthworks may have been the site of a WW2 searchlight battery. These crop marks may be an indication of their original position.

The Foss Dyke, Torksey Lock, Lincolnshire. Commonly believed to have been built by the Romans but opinions vary. Some suggest medieval but LiDAR and C-14 dating suggests that it may date from the early Iron Age, which would make it the oldest human-made watercourse in the UK.
