At a time when the Roma victims of the Holocaust remain largely overlooked, and with the growing threat of far-right extremism, it is vital to honour the resilience and ongoing struggle of the Roma community in their fight for justice, equity, and safety.

On the August 2nd, 1944, the remaining 3,000 Roma prisoners were murdered in what became known as the liquidation of the “Gypsy Camp.”.

Their resistance on that day prevented their execution on the 16th May 1944. However, in the aftermath, fearing further rebellion, the Nazi regime transferred approximately 3,000 Roma and Sinti to other camps.

✊🏽May 16th, 2025 marks Romani Resistance Day. This year commemorates 81 years since the Romani Uprising at Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp—an armed act of defiance by Roma and Sinti prisoners against their Nazi oppressors.
