With the historic unveiling of the UK’s first memorial dedicated to both the Roma and Sinti victims of the Holocaust, and the British service men who liberated them from the camps, it was a reminder that the fight for recognition is not over, and that we will not be forgotten.

Despite the Roma and Sinti victims of the Holocaust being largely forgotten in scholarship and media, yesterday, on the 1st of August 2025, change was seen, and history was made.

Of the 23,000 Roma and Sinti who were imprisoned in the camp, over 20,000 were killed. In total, it is estimated that between 200,000 and 1.5 million Roma and Sinti were murdered by Nazi Germany and their collaborators during the Second World War.

🕯️Today marks Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. The day honours the memory of nearly 3,000 Roma and Sinti murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of August 2–3, 1944. #RomaHolocaustMemorialDay #Roma #Sinti #Genocide
