Today we said our final goodbye to the Chairman of the Worldwide Robin Hood Society, Bob White, who sadly passed away earlier this month. We have posted our tribute to Bob on the Robin Hood website. He will be greatly missed by us all.

… so to deter the vandals, former Sheriff of Nottingham, Alderman Frank Dennett came to Robin’s aid & enlisted the services of Royal Ordnance Factory engineers, who made an arrow from a metal used in the manufacture of gun barrels & secured it with a specialised welding process

Over the years, the statue became a target for souvenir hunters and there have been times when Robin looked particularly forlorn, with no arrow, no bowstring and sometimes only half a bow. In the 50s and 60s, replacement arrows were costing the City Council £55 a time! 1/2

The statue was intended to mark the visit to Nottingham by Princess Elizabeth & the Duke of Edinburgh in 1949 but it was not unveiled until 1952, when the Duchess of Portland performed the ceremony in front of the Lord Mayor, civic dignitaries & some invited local schoolchildren.
