The idea we could build a massive solar farm on a 100x100 mi tract of land to power the whole country is not serious. The idea that it would ever be cost effective to power cities like NYC with rooftop solar/DERs is also not serious.
I see this misinterpreted all the time. Elon is not literally proposing that we build a single giant solar farm to power the whole country. It’s an illustration. “what about all the transmission you’d need!??”. You’re missing the point entirely. Solar PV has a higher power.
