I took this photo of @KamalaHarris at 3am on election night in her 2010 campaign for AG. Early returns had her so far behind that her opponent had declared victory. By dawn, she’d pulled ahead by a fraction of a point. I can be patient waiting for the results of #Election2024.

Via @AvalonZoppo: Donald Trump and other Republicans are turning to Harris’ record as a prosecutor to claim she was “soft on crime,” but Harris often used the phrase “smart on crime” to describe her criminal justice principles.

So here we are today! There remain many mysteries to solve, like: Is there really a secret tunnel in the basement? Where's the bomb shelter? Why is there still a weight-shaming antique scale? Is the abandoned cafeteria on the 6th floor haunted? I humbly remain your LOB historian.

Also known as the Professional and Vocational Standards Building, the structure was expanded in 1949 to become the complete building we know today. DCA would remain housed there until 1980, when it moved to 400 R Street. Legislative staff would subsequently move into the new LOB.

When its doors opened on January 15, 1940, it was officially named… the Business and Professions building! The first tenant was the recently created Department of Professional and Vocational Standards (later named the Department of Consumer Affairs) and various licensing boards.

The building was designed by Alfred Eichler with the Division of Architecture, supervised by Frank Johnson. Construction cost ~$1,375,000 (around $30 million today). Stylistically, the building is a grand example of "Streamline Moderne," a popular substyle of Art Deco in the 30s.

Construction planning that had begun in the late 1920s had stalled during the Depression — but when FDR's New Deal promoted investment in public infrastructure projects, the state's Department of Public Works broke ground in 1938 on "Office Building No. 3" at 10th and N.

The LOB's origins date back to the 1930s, when California government was growing but infrastructure in Sacramento wasn't. Local leaders fretted that the lack of office space could lead to a relocation of the state capital to Monterey! (More on that drama: https://t.co/EnE6Ji3vIn)

Ever since the #CALeg Swing Space was constructed, I’ve begun jovially welcoming visitors to their “historic LOB” — which wound up spurring my genuine interest in researching this building’s history. Here's a🧵!

I'm convinced that the #CALeg Senate's phone system hold music is a reworking of the 1982 hit song "Our House" by Madness, and proving this theory has turned into a monomaniacal obsession.

It’s only the May Revise if it’s from the Révision region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling structural deficit.
