The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellowships support applicants up to 8 years post-PhD from anywhere in the world who want to spend 1-2 years working in Europe (incl. UK!). These can be a fantastic stepping stone to longer term fellowships and establishing independence.

There is still a huge amount of work to do but this is a fascinating first look at an S-layer penetrating phage!.

Interestingly the tail contracts less than in other characterised phages (& related contractile structures). This seems to be a feature of phage infecting bacteria that have an S-layer - given that these are likely the majority of bacteria, this is probably really common

Our structures reveal the conformational changes that lead to the contraction of the phage tail. Unfortunately the videos won't upload here - but go look at them in the paper!.

phiCD508 is a 23 MDa contractile phage that specifically recognises the major C. difficile S-layer protein SlpA and that can penetrate the cell envelope via a seemingly non-enzymatic mechanism.

It's been a really fun project, led by Jason Wilson in collaboration with Per Bullough and Louis-Charles Fortier at the Université de Sherbrooke - now published in @LSAjournal.
