The Rifles is the largest infantry regiment within the British Army. We are based throughout the UK and offer the widest choice in role across the Infantry.
The regiment is deeply saddened at the loss of 2Lt Max George who was killed during a training exercise on Salisbury Plain on Tuesday 21st June. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the 5th Battalion The Rifles.
Max’s eulogy can be found on SWIFT.
It’s with much sadness and a heavy heart that we would like to advise that Colour Serjeant Matthew Pascoe sadly passed away on Tuesday 25 May 2021.
Matt (y) was a true and charismatic Rifleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The funeral of Captain (Retd) Bryn Parry CBE is being held at Salisbury Cathedral on Wednesday 26th April at 3pm.
He was a true Rifleman and the founder of Help For Heroes.
Swift and Bold.
In the lead up to Armistice Day, B Coy 2 RIFLES were tasked with assisting in the burial service of Rfn Adams of The Rifle Brigade, one of our antecedent regiments, which fought in World War One. With His distant relatives and our Riflemen bade farewell.

Training with the Finnish Army has been a privilege for 5 RIFLES.
A Rifleman quoted “This exercise has been immensely fun and challenging. We have also been hosted particularly well too. We are definitely training with friends out here.”
We know that our Riflemen are not immune to the cost-of-living crisis sweeping the county. In order to help them, we are offering Tesco vouchers to those within our regiment who are most at need; hoping to free up funds for other essentials. Details and applications are on SWIFT.
Did you know that Rifle Regiments march at 140 paces to the minute in comparison to the rest of the Army that march at 120 paces? We are swift in thought and bold in action, and that includes charging a magazine!
Do you know why we march at a faster pace?
“Fix Swords!” is a command given to our Riflemen when they are about to engage in close combat with the enemy.
In The Rifles, we call it a sword, not a bayonet.
Rfn Toby Spender has followed in his father's footsteps by passing off the parade square at

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for those who make up the Armed Forces community. On this day we publicly acknowledge the sacrifices and efforts made by not only Riflemen but all of the Armed Forces, in the execution of their extensive duties and responsibilities.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Lance Corporal Andy Francis, who died in Scotland on Sunday 23rd May. Our thoughts are with his family and all his friends at this time.
He will be sadly missed by his comrades in 2 RIFLES and all Riflemen past and present.

Like millions of others we have been watching the documentary ‘Soldier’ on the BBC. This five-part series charts the recruits’ journey through the British Army’s Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.
Throwback Thursday.
In this 1984 video, one of our antecedent regiments, The Royal Green Jackets, can be seen training with the Self Loading Rifle (SLR). It is an iconic weapon with legendary status to many. With a 7.62mm calibre, it packed a serious punch.

Happy Birthday to us! The Rifles were formed in 2007 from the amalgamation of our four forming regiments: Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, The Light Infantry, Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and The Royal Green Jackets.

A member of the Regiment shared this video with us, and it struck a chord. Each year, we honour those members of the Armed Forces who have died in the line of duty. May they rest in peace.
The Duke was thanked for his 67 years of service and support to the Regiment, before the Buglers sounded the ‘No More Parades’ call, marking HRH’s final ceremony as The Rifles’ Colonel-in-Chief.
With a rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 838 metres a second, the GPMG is an absolute beast. The weapon is heavy to carry but devastatingly effective and that is why it has been in service for decades. Do you have a nickname for it?
The Regiment sends its congratulations and best wishes to their Royal Highnesses on this historic day, and it's thanks to all our Riflemen who were on parade. Swift and Bold.
3 RIFLES holding a position in France during Ex ORION.
Training with our NATO allies not only helps us strengthen our friendships it also enhances our ability to fight alongside different militaries more effectively.
Today is the 77th anniversary of D-Day when one of The Rifles’ fore-bearers, the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (the Oxs and Bucks), became the first allied troops to land in Northern France and secure Pegasus Bridge at 12:16 AM, hours before the main landings.
We never leave anyone behind, which is why Riflemen train to simulate battlefield CASEVACS (Casualty Evacuations).
The British Army has every reason to be proud of the medical support it provides soldiers, in camp or on operations.
Throwback Thursday. Infantry soldiers need to be able to reach the battlefield ready to fight, and in many cases that means getting there on foot.
In this 1980s video Riflemen can be seen competing in an inter-platoon march and shoot competition, which was a twist on the CFT.
We are delighted to announce that our Colonel Commandant, General Sir Patrick Sanders has been appointed as the next Chief of the General Staff. He will be in post from June 2022.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Last night, at Guildhall in London, we celebrated what makes our Regiment so special by recognising the outstanding contributions made by selected Riflemen. Awards were presented by our Colonel-in-Chief

GPMG
The GPMG has been in service with the British Army since the 1960s. It has stood the test of time due to the fact that it is a highly effective and battle-proven weapon that lays down a devastating volume of fire; of 750 rounds per minute at up to 1800 meters.

He was a Rifleman through and through and will be missed by many. Swift and Bold.
The recent Cadet Cup ensured our cadet detachments not only had fun but also the opportunity to develop their teamwork skills.
RIFLES cap badged cadets make up a significant proportion of all cadets, and we take our responsibilities of helping to train them seriously.
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the formation of The Rifles. We have evolved during that time and will continue to do so. As a forward-thinking regiment, we welcome change and the opportunity to showcase our adaptive skills as thinking Riflemen.

The Rifles are extremely sad to announce the death of Rifleman (Captain) Gary ‘Gaz’ Case. Hugely loved and respected by all Riflemen across The Regiment. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. We ask that their privacy is respected during this difficult time.

The regiment has achieved a lot in 2023, and we have enjoyed sharing some of the moments with you. It wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without sharing the top five posts of the last 12 months. Which is your favourite image?
Wishing everyone a safe and Happy New Year.
It is with great sadness that we mark the announcement of the death of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The Rifles owes an immense debt of gratitude to The Duke of Edinburgh for his sustained and selfless support over the last 68 years.

Did you know that 79 years ago today The Rifles’ forebearers, the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (Ox and Bucks) carried out the very first action that took place on D-Day, several hours ahead of the main landings, at 0015 hrs on the 6th of June, 1944?
The GPMG has stood the test of time for a reason. It remains a highly effective weapon in our arsenal and is respected by all infantry soldiers, and the enemy.
3 RIFLES’ snipers keeping their expert skills razor sharp.
The term sniper originates from the marksmen who were able to hunt and shoot the elusive and small bird species, the Snipe.
On behalf of the regiment, we would like to congratulate seven of our Warrant Officers who have been selected for Late Entry Commission. Swift and Bold.

The Band and Bugles of The Rifles are unique and are defined by traditions dating back over two centuries, such as the use of the silver bugle and the distinctly fast marching speed of 140 paces per minute. They perform worldwide and as you would expect often steal the show.

In true Christmas spirit Aaron Speke, a RIFLES Cadet from Oxfordshire, has donated 150 Christmas stockings to 1 RIFLES whilst they are deployed on Op Tosca in Cyprus over the festive season. His generosity is a joyful example of the strength of the RIFLES family.
The GPMG is the perfect example of, if it's not broken, don’t fix it. 1 RIFLES demonstrated this during a recent machine gun Cadre in Sennybridge, Wales.
In our regiment, we pride ourselves on the phrase, “Once a Rifleman, always a Rifleman”, which is why, as part of The Rifleman’s Association we set up the Always A Rifleman Programme to support our veterans who are in crisis. This includes antecedent and forming regiments.

Modern combat can happen at any time of day or night. Our forebearers were limited in their capacity to fight at night. Today we can operate 24 hours a day due to our Night Vision Goggles (NVG) capabilities, but many aspects of warfighting and strategy remain timeless.
Our instructors are some of the best in the British Army. Here a member of the Directing Staff (or DS) gives advice to a student on the 5 RIFLES JNCO Cadre. We like to spot talent early on so that the best can progress up the ranks; and we do this by running regular cadres.
Well done to 5 RIFLES for winning the recent 20 Brigade Operational Shooting Competition. The regiment sends its congratulations to Rfn Gurung who was the top individual shot in the competition and to LCpl Eggett on his first official win as a shooting team leader.
