Our region is home to some fascinating avian species – can you recognise them all? #ORCT director Odette recently snapped these field shots, showcasing the diversity of #renosterveld birdlife. This time of year we see local indigenous birds and some visiting migratory species.

#TrailCamTuesday: Can you recognise 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢 from our #TrailCam photo? 📸🐾 The #Aardwolf is a member of the #hyena family and is considered a friend to farmers thanks to their appetite for insects – especially #termites.

You don’t have to be a botanist to appreciate the beauty of #renosterveld 🌼 If you’re on holiday in the #Overberg, head outside & explore the local vegetation. Here are some of our species that are seen flowering in the height of #summer… How many can you spot in the veld?

We found some ‘renosters’ roaming in #renosterveld… 🦏 Not the large horned mammals, but these #Rhinobeetles! 🪲 Our team identified these critters as Rustyfluff Rhinobeetles (𝘒𝘪𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘶𝘴) – they’re related to #dungbeetles, but don’t roll dung balls

It’s hard to believe that these massive ears can be overlooked in the veld, but the Bat-eared Fox (𝘖𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘺𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴) masterfully blends into the colours of #renosterveld with its grey and tan coat! 🦊 🔁 Reposted from Monique du Plessis (@moniek.kiekies on Insta)

THIS #FloralFriday, 𝘏𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘢 𝘬𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘦, only occurs on south-facing shale #renosterveld ridges where quartz pebbles are found. During flowering season, flowers will only show themselves from 6:00 to 12:30.

The Kleindam Primary School visited our Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve. From Grade 1 to Grade 6, under the guidance of our Environmental Educator Gretha Engelbrecht and ORCT intern Nande Notyalwa, they undertook soil experiments and enjoyed a walk through the #renosterveld.

We are learning from the 10 Black Harriers we fitted with GPS tags. Odette says, “We can see that several of the Black Harriers have not returned to the same areas this year. They have spread out and are breeding in the Klein Karoo, the Eastern Cape and the Riversdale area.”

Buying and managing a 500-hectare farm consisting of Endangered #renosterveld would never have been possible were it not for our incredible partners. How can we thank these partners enough? @WWFSouthAfrica @worldlandtrust @IUCNNL @wild_landscapes

When we bought the Plaatjieskraal with partners, we didn’t just do it for the flowers. While there are more than 560 plant species, it’s even more valuable because it’s in close proximity to our #Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve. The 2 will now be managed as a single reserve.

Getting to the Overberg’s ‘koppies’ and valleys is not always easy. But thanks to this new bakkie from @FordSouthAfrica, we can now reach the remaining #renosterveld fragments in this tough-as-nails vehicle. Thank you so much, Ford. @FordFoundation

Protection, education, research – these 3 pillars underpin our work to conserve #renosterveld, but we can’t do it alone. One tangible way to aid the #ORCT is by leaving a bequest in support of our work this #GivingTuesday. Learn more: https://t.co/sTI7TQXjQA

We’ve teamed up with a powerful group of global partners to buy part of a 500-hectare farm, called Plaatjieskraal, between Swellendam and Bredasdorp – consisting of Endangered #renosterveld. This deal was 16 years in the making: https://t.co/fw6R33zFtK
