When those who can make a difference don’t show up, the most marginalised pay the price. It doesn’t take much — sign & share petitions, turn up to vote, & educate your friends, families, colleagues, communities. It’s not everything, but it can change lives. The struggle continues.

4/ Meanwhile, UK government plans to increase the settlement period to 10 years & tighten citizenship rules for most migrants. Many undocumented people already face a 20-year wait to regularise, then must wait another 10 years for settlement & citizenship—a punishment in itself.

3/ Despite 65% of those voting supporting the reform, the boycott tactic worked. Far-right voices now push for even tougher naturalisation laws, further marginalising and excluding migrant communities —especially those from outside the EU.

2/ The vote aimed to reduce residency requirements from 10-15 years to 5 years for citizenship — benefiting millions, including many raised and educated in Italy but denied full rights. Yet, PM Meloni & far-right parties urged voters to boycott.

1/ Italy’s recent referendum to fast-track citizenship for migrants failed due to a low turnout — just 30% voted, below the 50% quorum. While Italy faced a boycott, the UK is planning to make it even harder for most migrants to settle and gain citizenship.

It will @NesrineMalik. The 10-year route ALREADY causes untold pain. Undocumented people who manage to regularise after 20 years are forced onto it,spending 30+ years in limbo. It's used as punishment. Now Labour wants to expand that cruelty to more people.
