@ONS ❌ Misconception 5: “The historic counties *are* about admin.” ✅ Reality: Each county may have originally been set up for some public purpose or other. However, long before the beginning of the 19th century it was their geographical and cultural identities that were paramount.

❌ Misconception 4: “The historic counties were abolished in 1974.” ✅ Reality: The ‘admin counties / county councils’ created from 1888 onwards “were abolished in England and Wales in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972 *not* the historic counties”. The UK Government’s @ONS.

❌ Misconception 3: “The Welsh counties are not really Welsh.” ✅ Reality: The historic counties of Wales, although formalised from 13thC, were based on well-established Commotes & cantrefs. They are an unbroken link with Welsh history and culture of more than a thousand years.

Orkney has 20 inhabited islands, and some 70 islands overall, with countless islets, rocks and skerries. In island names, the suffix ‘a’ or ‘ay’ represents the Norse ey, meaning ‘island’. Those described as ‘holms’ are very small.

The name ’Orkney‘ is Norse in form but has a much earlier origin; the islands were known as the Orcades at least by the 1st century AD. The old Irish Gaelic name for the islands was Insi Orc (which may be translated ’island of the pigs’).
