Tents, blankets and solar lamps are on their way to Kunar to support Afghan families hardest hit by the deadly earthquake. Thanks to unearmarked funding from 🇩🇰 @DanishMFA, 🇳🇱 @DutchMFA, 🇳🇴 @NorwayMFA, 🇸🇪 @SweMFA & 🇬🇧 @FCDOGovUK, @UNHCRAfg & partners can respond without delay.

The recent earthquake has affected more than 500,000 people in E Afghanistan — aid from donors, including Pakistan, is vital and welcome. Especially given the circumstances, I appeal to the @GovtofPakistan to pause the implementation of the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan.

UNHCR is deeply saddened by the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan, a crisis within a crisis, as the country struggles to cope with mass returns from neighbouring countries. Our thoughts are with victims. UNHCR is responding on the ground, but more resources are urgently needed.

Heartbreaking news from Afghanistan. A devastating earthquake has taken many lives on top of drought and the forced return of millions already struggling to survive. Afghans cannot face this alone.
A major earthquake has caused many casualties in Afghanistan. This adds death and destruction to other challenges including drought and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries. Hopefully the donor community will not hesitate to support relief efforts.

The humanitarian funding crisis is putting refugee education at risk. In 2024, the #DAFI programme saw a notable drop in enrollment, only the second decrease in its 30+ year history. Demand remains high. We can’t let funding shortfalls steal futures. https://t.co/Qdjj1zjWMi

The starvation of people in #Gaza must end now. Standing with UN and NGO colleagues ready to deliver desperately needed, lifesaving aid to hundreds of thousands at risk of death. A ceasefire followed by meaningful peace talks are urgently required to put an end to this tragedy.

🚨 11.6 million people forced to flee are at risk of losing life-saving aid. Not because the needs are gone, but because the funding is. This is the biggest humanitarian aid cut in over a decade. 👉 Donate now: https://t.co/Z5UIqtqfEF

“We are right now facing a deadly cocktail of a mix of forced displacement which is on the increase and at the same time financial aid cuts.” ~ UNHCR’s @DominiqueHyde warns. 🧵

Today I briefed the media at @UNGeneva on the findings of our On The Brink report. The headline: 11.6m at risk of losing life-saving aid in 2025. In Chad, over 4,000 survivors of sexual violence can no longer count on the care they were promised. https://t.co/cTFRDWyDoz

Following major cuts to humanitarian budgets, up to 11.6 million refugees and others forced to flee risk losing access this year to direct humanitarian assistance from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
🚨 As global displacement soars, critical aid is vanishing. UNHCR’s @DominiqueHyde urges all donors — governments, institutions, individuals — to step up. The lives of millions are hanging in the balance.

These aren’t just budget cuts. They’re lifelines being pulled from millions of people forced to flee. This is the real impact of funding cuts. Learn more:

This #WorldRefugeeDay, let’s shift the narrative. Refugees aren’t just defined by what they’ve lost but by what they bring: skills, ideas, new perspectives. True solidarity means opportunity, inclusion and shared responsibility. Let’s build a world where everyone belongs.

This #WorldRefugeeDay, ask yourself: What kind of world do you want to live in? A world that turns away? Or a world that shows up? Let’s choose solidarity.

Hey, are you still with us? In the face of ongoing wars, humanitarian crises and displacement, the world must not look away. Choose empathy over apathy. Choose solidarity with refugees. #WorldRefugeeDay

Funding cuts may change many things, but not our commitment to stay and deliver. "UNHCR anticipates it will end this year with available funding at about the same level as a decade ago, despite the number of people forced to flee having nearly doubled over the same period".
“Although resources are fewer and our capacity to deliver is reduced, we will continue to work hard to respond to emergencies, protect the rights of refugees and pursue solutions.” ~ @FilippoGrandi ℹ️ https://t.co/1bNi9Zwyqb

As millions around the world celebrate #EidAlAdha, my thoughts are with displaced families observing this sacred time far from home. May this Eid bring peace, unity and renewed hope to all. Eid Mubarak from all of us at UNHCR. 🌙

How many times can a family flee before there’s nowhere left to run? In DR Congo, countless families are forced to find out. Despite peace agreements, violence, hunger & disease continue to devastate communities. Over 28M people are food insecure & 139K have fled this year.
