"For a client group who have been medicalised, dismissed, & become accustomed to masking their difficulties, providing a space where the client can be their authentic self. is paramount. Perhaps this is what forms the foundation of effective & #NeurodiversityAffirming therapy".

We call for more space and safety in the psychology profession for autistic and other neurodivergent psychologists to be open about their identities so we can learn from them. We must respect autistic expertise, in research and clinical practice.

In our letter, we echo @BullussErin‘s call for the importance of cultural competency and humility among psychologists. We suggest without cultural competency, it is possible a (non-autistic) psychologist might misinterpret the experiences of their autistic client.

If we apply the double-empathy problem to the practice of psychology, forming a therapeutic alliance and creating safety might look different for an autistic client, if the psychologist is non-autistic. There could be a disconnect in therapist-client communication.

In psychological therapy, being with the client (common factors) and building a strong therapeutic alliance affects outcomes. However, these relational aspects of therapy have been largely overlooked in autism research.
