It's a busy time of year on the brooks; time to mow the vegetation to get things ready for our winter wildfowl and next year's breeding waders. There's a small window of time to complete this - after our waders have finished breeding and before the water levels begin to rise.

Wonderful #Wildflowers. The thistle-like flowers of Knapweed are often visited by butterflies (like this Brimstone), bees and hoverflies. Most of the local names including 'Bachelor's buttons' and 'Iron knobs' are explained by the hard, knobby flowerheads. 📷Graham Osborne

If you're planning a visit over the weekend, here's a taster of what you could spot. despite the very low water levels, there's been a nice range of wading birds and good raptor action. As a late addition to the sightings board I found this Bronze Ground Beetle.

Here's a selection of photos taken by our fantastic volunteer Graham Osborne during his visit on Sunday, which included a sighting of a White-tailed Eagle. There is a stunning Wasp Spider on 'Adder alley' - she's got a signpost to make her easier to find.

This beautiful beast is a Wasp Spider. It can be found during the summer moths hunting in Uppertons field. It builds large orb webs in grassland and heathland, and attaches its silk egg-sacs to the grasses. The web has a wide, white zig-zag strip running down the middle.

Growing in damp areas, the tall, stately spires of magenta-pink will attract bees and butterflies. Later in the year the seed heads provide a copious supply of seeds for the birds. Find out more on our #wildflowers trail:

This thistle produces masses of fluffy seeds in late summer and, despite being considered as a weed, is an important food source for birds. The nectar is popular with butterflies like this Meadow Brown. Discover more on our #Wildflowers trail:

The flowers are reminiscent of orchids but the hairy toothed leaves and square stems are not! The flowers are pollinated by bees but are constructed so that any unwelcome insects, like flies, are denied entrance. Find out more on our #wildflowers trail:
