The airbag is perhaps the most popular car safety feature. It is also the most mis-sold and misunderstood (as seen in a recent FIR against a car maker). Here is a thread that I hope will provide more clarity on airbag functioning/effectiveness (1/n)

A thread for those who are unaware of NCAP rating (BNCAP/GNCAP) limitations: https://t.co/GLa99WmFv0
@MORTHIndia announced the monumental #BharatNCAP today. The BharatNCAP will provide star ratings to cars based on various parameters. But there are some crucial details that NCAP ratings may not mention. Here are some points all car buyers must know about NCAP ratings. (1/n)

All 4 occupants died in Coimbatore as a car (Tata Altroz) hit a tree. Expect more & more fatalities in 5-star-rated cars as their sales increase. Not because NCAPs are rigged, paid etc. But because authorities haven't really solved the major underlying issues.

~50 dead in 2 bus fires in a month! It's easier to blame bus operators, but these deaths are on @MORTHIndia /State RTOs for not enforcing the bus body code/safety standards. Stricter enforcement should be conducted during the festive period considering the high movement.

No country for pedestrians. We aren't safe now even on pedestrian crossings at red signals. What's more shocking than the crash is the absolute callousness of the biker to just ride away. Thankfully, he was caught. We keep forgetting that each one of us is a pedestrian.

Just because an expressway has wide/smooth lanes doesn't mean it's safe at 100/120 speed limits. Roads also need safe road furniture. 2 dead as an SUV hit an poorly-installed metal barrier that impaled both the car & occupants. The driver will be blamed as usual, not MSRDC.

Great...the last thing we needed was fake videos encouraging dangerous driving to promote a brand. The car damage at the end doesn't match a rollover. Please don't fall for such things. 'Desh ka loha' was bad enough as it is.
Tata Altroz crashed and overturned at a speed of 150 km/h. Despite the high-speed impact, all occupants survived without any injuries.💀

1 died & 2 seriously injured as an overloaded truck (with sand) lost control at a turn and the cargo fell on their car in Gurgaon Such crashes aren't even rare to ignore This could happen to any of us, anytime. Wonder when the authorities plan to wake up.

Same issue. Same day. But this time 4 car occupants were impaled in Jalandhar. A night crash where the car driver probably didn't even see the rods. Forget 2W, even car and bus occupants are vulnerable now. There is no running away from this. Start asking for accountability.
A school bus carrying around 60 students aged 5–6 years met with a serious accident near Kamble Stop on the Pune–Solapur highway. The rear glass of the bus shattered, and iron rods pierced into the vehicle, injuring 5–6 children. Fortunately, all injuries were reported as

No country for pedestrians... Walking on Indian roads is like being thrown in a fighting arena. A fact that everyone, especially vehicle drivers and road engineers, forgets is that each one of us is a pedestrian. This could happen to anyone of us. https://t.co/409XrytSdl

Hydroplaning has got little to do with the vehicle's engineering/driver skill. Hydroplaning is mainly influenced by: TYRES (3mm or more tread depth)>>> Road (good drainage) > vehicle speed (lower the better) > vehicle features/driver skill. https://t.co/EqwLGsJCu0

Crashes/injuries can have multiple contributors: 1. Truck speeding at the intersection. 2. 2W rider possibly distracted. 3. Pedestrians on road (Processions on a NH invites risks). 4. NHAI not providing median crash barriers. https://t.co/GTbfRWfTJr Result: 9 dead, 20+ injured.

The father did everything right: bought a car for safety, was attentive while crossing, and protected his child. Yet, he lost his life. No matter which vehicle you own, everyone is a pedestrian first. Pedestrian safety should take top priority. https://t.co/Ims7YggPGO

This was bound to happen sooner or later. The risks of sunroofs far outweigh its benefits. Honestly don't see any point in having one. It's high time @siamindia & @MORTHIndia regulate such features. We just can't keep copying the west without studying Indian feasibility.
What can go wrong with kids poking their heads out of the sunroof? #RoadSafety

Tata is just towing the government's line. @MORTHIndia even mentions 'potholes' as features along with bridges, curves, etc. in the crash reports. The report specifically says drivers need additional skill to drive around potholes. A Pothole is not a bug, it's a feature :).
