Back end salmon. Spey casts, sinking tips, red flies, purple flies, black flies, any flies. Leaking waders, wind, falling leaves. Fishing with friends, talking shit, eating shit, sharing ideas. The drive home, the smile and doing the same next year.

The beauty of wild fish.

Give me a small stream where the trout live in shitty places to reach and the bow and arrow cast is often the only cast that’ll get your fly to the right spot and I’m happy.

A few fly changes, moving from an upstream dry to downstream and being patient paid off.

Sometimes, just sometimes.

A couple of hours, a few rises, a nice trout, getting broken in a tree root by a big one, a dead shad and getting to fish with some nice gear.

Back eddy feeders that ate everything and nothing, a ton of beetles but no wind, lifting into a good fish and nothing there, seeing your pal make an awesome cast and the fish rise, just talking and sometimes, not always, ignoring a rise. One of those good days.

An early start in search of rising trout worked out OK.

Patience, spotting the rise, wading as deep as you dare and getting it as close to the far bank as you can. It’s been a while since I’ve done this and have missed it.
