NEW: The #FIFAWorldCup match in Seattle on June 26 had already been designated as a “Pride Match” before the fixtures were decided. Now we know the teams who will play in it… Egypt and Iran. Both nations have draconian anti-gay laws. For @outsports

London used to build stuff so much faster. London's tube network was built almost entirely in the space of 17 years. The DLR went from route picked to open for passengers in 5. We are told that this is impossible today. It isn't.

Just crazy how many people the Elizabeth Line shifts. 800,000 journeys are made per day. For comparison the M1 motorway is responsible for 140,000 daily trips according to the AA. Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow should all get a Crossrail, and London should get a second.
There will soon be an Elizabeth line train through the core section of the network every three minutes on Saturdays, as TfL prepares to increase the service. https://t.co/PJsKAVDi1Z

On self-driving cars: "In medicine, when a treatment shows this level of benefit, we stop the trial early. Continuing to give patients the placebo becomes unethical. When an intervention works this clearly, you change what you do. In driving, we’re all the control group."
I have a guest essay in @nytimes today about autonomous vehicle safety. I wrote it because I’m tired of seeing children die. Done right, we can eliminate car crashes as a leading cause of death in the United States @Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million

Starmer says he is “accepting the Fingleton recommendations” and asking the business secretary to extend the lessons to other sectors. The government’s wariness about the nuclear deregulation proposals seems to have been ditched
John Fingleton’s review for the government of how to reduce unnecessary barriers and costs for nuclear power development is a tour de force, a compelling road map for how to accelerate important infrastructure investment in the UK - which is the sine qua non of improving growth

The biggest “free lunch” in Britain is auctioning off the landing slots to pay for the Heathrow third runway. They’re worth ~£15-40 billion. It would make the project entirely self-funding *and* have a more efficient use of the runway than the current plan to give them away.
