I do not intend to disappear completely and will continue to contribute to healthcare and public service, but that is for another day. For now, it's a thank you. It has been a pleasure and a privilege.

My time in office has undoubtedly been dominated by the pandemic, but despite that the team I have led has driven advancements in many important areas from genomics to stroke.

This is the 10 Year Health Plan to make the NHS fit for the future, delivered through the three big shifts. It fundamentally reinvents our approach to healthcare so that we can guarantee the NHS will be there for all who need it for generations to come. ➡️

I have always been exceptionally proud to work in the NHS and while stepping down from this role, I remain passionate and committed to improving the health of patients and improving the experience of staff.

After nearly 8 years in the role, this summer I will be stepping down as National Medical Director for NHS England. It has been an immense privilege to serve as National Medical Director and to work alongside so many fantastic colleagues, all dedicated to improving the NHS.

I believe the time is right to once again look at medical training, especially with a new 10-Year Health Plan in development. Our common aim is to improve the working lives of resident doctors, support career progression, and deliver the best possible care to patients.

Today NHS England has launched a new review looking at postgraduate medical training. It’s been several years since medical training was reviewed and the way we practise medicine has continued to evolve, as have the career wishes and expectations of medical graduates.

Thank you to colleagues @CHFTNHS for a great visit. It was wonderful to meet so many people and learn more about your digital health innovation journey. Some really impressive work making a big difference to both patients and staff.

The cases highlighted in this article are unacceptable. There is no place for these personal attacks in the NHS.    In the medical community we have to be clear that all NHS staff should feel safe to come to work and be treated with respect and dignity.

It is difficult to put into words just how tough it is for our frontline staff at the moment. We are really worried about the toll that flu and other viruses are taking on our patients and on services across the NHS. 🧵 ⬇️
