The short doc of the 400year old cotton tree that falls in Freetown #SierraLeone, “Where My Memory Began” has been getting so much love in the festival circuit. If it all stops here, we are grateful for the creative experience, the lessons & the growth #SaloneX @houseof_salone

A piece I wrote on #Iran was published by @haymarketbooks in the brilliant book, “We Are Each Other’s Liberation”, described as a major anthology that illuminates historical solidarities between Black and Asian feminists. Order here 🫶🏾💜 https://t.co/beiaFRU5dx

The irony is that it is also one of the most beautiful and rich plots of land on planet earth which makes this not a coincidence.

Darfur has to be the most tragic plot of land on planet earth. I cannot think of another people who have suffered so deeply, so constantly, and yet so quietly as the Darfur people. May Allah honor their strength, elevate their spirits, and grant them eternal peace in Jannah iA

Why is society so quick at dismissing indigenous knowledge, leadership and talent to praise western euro centric knowledge that has no issue co-chairing any rooms because 1,2,3. Erasure is real and it IS harmful. #SaloneX

We don’t need something that’s already there. There’s already culture in Sierra Leone, talent in Sierra Leone and entrepreneurial spirit in Sierra Leone. Platform that and stop with the ego politics that manufactures consent to force someone in a narrative that’s already there.

POV: the job function is “facilitator” but as soon as you’re faced with critical thought, you gaslight and block voices. To do this anywhere is harmful but to silence in one of the most impoverished countries in the world is harmful on another level #SaloneX #SierraLeone #Miatta

Nina Simone all weekend for me☀️ to be black conscious and alive is a privilege “Birds flying high, you know I feel” “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me…. And I’m feeling good”

A reminder to #SierraLeone youth that radical inclusion and decolonization isn’t having a minister’s wife shape your identity and culture. Good day! #SaloneX

Since I’m a writer, reminder of the definition of nepotism: Nepotism: ˈnɛpətɪz(ə)m/ [noun] the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs. —> I’d add, w/ no transparent nor competitive process.

On political erasure & its violence. I woke up to messages confirming that nepotism is still thriving in #SierraLeone & that the wife of a minister is apparently in a stronger position to co-lead on culture than any hardworking Sierra Leonean female artists who shape our culture

Feeling hopeful w/ all the new possibilities. Funny thing is, while in #SierraLeone, I chased those in power to carve out space for me to open a library - I had secured funding!- only to be run around. There’s something disturbing abt these folks in power in that they want to be

“Despite being a resource rich country, Beah explains: “In Sierra Leone there are no prosperous areas. There are mansions in the midst of degradation & fancy cars driving on dirt roads.” “But ppl are shamed into believing they are responsible for what has happened to them.”
