n/n in summary, this work shows that in #zebrafish (like other vertebrates) the head is not like the trunk, and it’s specification and migration are controlled by distinct genes- like cdx4!

6/n the environment matters, but only sometimes, it seems. Elegant cell transplantation studies showed that Cdx4 activity was not required in the somitic mesoderm for proper crest migration

4/n some lovely bioinformatics analyses- spearheaded by lab undergrad Clare Booth- followed up on seminal work from @TSS_Lab and @leonard_zon showed that Cdx4 regulates downstream specifier genes!

5/n: confocal microscopy reminded us that development is beautiful, but also revealed that Cdx4 deficient zebrafish show aberrant trunk crest migration. Specifically, the ‘leader’ cells lose their identities (politics much?):
