"Even if a young Londoner saved 10% of their salary every year from 21, they would not be able to afford the average UK home until they were 34." "In London, it would take 19 years just for the deposit." Our Director @freddie_poser on the UK Housing Crisis at @LondonAssembly 👇

What are dual‑aspect rules? Effectively, they steer schemes toward homes with windows on two external facades to allow cross‑ventilation, better daylight and outlook. The idea is quality: cooler in summer, light, liveable, and resilient. (2/13)

The Mayor is changing London’s dual‑aspect rules. What are they? How are they changing? Why does this matter for design quality, viability and delivery? This thread explains the shift and why it’s a sensible, evidence‑led step. (1/13)

Unfortunately, the London guidance requires dual aspect be maximised - which in practice means buildings and flats loose floorspace to create "notches" in the external walls. This makes flats smalller, reduces the number of flats, and increases costs.

Big win for YIMBYs 🎉 New reforms will ease dual-aspect requirements, allow more dwellings per core, and add flexibility on cycle storage. These are much needed changes that will make higher-density housing more viable and deliver thousands more homes.

Great to see the Government & Mayor of London moving forward with making building easier. The experts we surveyed thought interventions like this could be big for growth.

Great news! Today the @MayorofLondon has announced steps to deliver needed homes more quickly in London, as we suggested in July. Congratulations to all the YIMBY allies who have worked hard to get this through!

There hasn’t been a single new application into the Building Safety Regulator since the 14th July. The BSR is single handedly destroying any dense building in England. My new paper for @yimbyinitiative outlines how to fix this 👇

🏗️Why is Sadiq Khan slashing affordable quotas? Because astonishingly, more housing starts in London last year were approved under Boris Johnson's London Plans, not Khan's - nine years after he left office. Watch our Head of Housing @Ben_A_Hopkinson explain why that matters⬇️

As someone who had to leave Peckham because it was too unaffordable, I find opposition to the redevelopment of the Ayelsham centre incredibly frustrating.
