This is often not for reasons of ill health but due to complex factors such as breakdowns in support within the family and inadequate support from agencies. It is a gross injustice that the average length of stay for these individuals is 5 years...

Produced in collaboration with @unibirmingham, the report explores the reasons why at any one time in England there remains around 2000+ people with a learning disability/autistic people, who find themselves needlessly detained within the hospital system for prolonged periods.

At the event, we launched Kasibba’s book and accompanying short film, which details our work with one woman who was kept in long-term segregation for 20+ years and who we supported over a 6 year period to leave the hospital system and move into her own home.

At any one time in England, there are approximately 2000 people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people living in locked in-patient hospitals, with an average length of stay of 5 years. However, some will remain in hospital for 50+ years despite not needing treatment.
