I didn't know him, but I'll remember him. Raise a glass to a giant of memory. He passes forever into the hereafter, but his memory is preserved crystalline in his work, patiently waiting for your visit. (10/FIN).

He understood the profound effect the conditions of encoding and retrieval have on what is remembered. He followed the twisting paths of memory search, demonstrating the rich structure present in the sequences of responses people make when probing their own past experience. (9).

He spoke of reminiscence as mental time travel, he emphasized the subjective nature of memory, the knowledge one has that a particular memory is of their own past experience. If there wasn’t a word for a phenomenon, he made one up, or dusted one off from the distant past. (8).

“Lisa, every good scientist is half B.F. Skinner and half P.T. Barnum” (The Simpsons 9F14 “Duffless”). Tulving knew how to capture the hearts of a scientific audience, and his scientific writing had a bravado, fearlessness, and wry humor that was unique and disarming. (7).

Tulving argued persuasively for the utility of the distinction between episodic memory (memory for the events of our lives) and semantic memory (our knowledge of the world and the things in it). Whether one accepted this, or pushed against it, it energized the field. (6).

For decades, Tulving set the terms for theories of human memory, set the standard for clean and powerful behavioral experimentation, and developed novel, creative styles of analyses that resonate to this day. (5).

Tulving was retired, but when I asked around about a possible meeting, he graciously invited me to his home. We sat and chatted about memory research and memory theory, and his housekeeper made us a lunch spread including ‘Estonian pizza’, a flatbread with various toppings. (4).

In terms of academic heritage, he was a grandfather, having mentored my mentor Mike Kahana. I met Tulving in person only once, a few years ago, while visiting Toronto’s Rotman Research Institute to give a talk for their rounds. (3).

May his memory be a blessing. Tulving’s ideas are bone deep in the work I do and the way I think about memory. The path of my life would be dramatically different in a world where he wasn’t a memory scientist. (2).

Feeling a bit blue on the eve of the Memory Disorders Research Society meeting, in that I won't be able to attend this year. So perhaps I can reach out with a handful of thoughts about Endel Tulving. A short appreciation of his scientific life on the occasion of his death. (1).

I just chipped in for the Data Colada GoFundMe. It’s a good cause, we should demonstrate against using lawsuits to stifle scientific criticism. Scientific criticism is vital to science! Also these are good people doing good work 🫡.

Just donated to the DC gofundme. It is important that we do not let those actively trying to improve science be bullied into silence. Beyond the monetary support, there is value in just expressing support. Please consider donating, every little bit helps.
