I turn 43 today and I’d like to say that the unspoken rules mean nothing. You don’t have to hit it big in your 20’s to matter. Just make the music that you can make….the music that is in you. That’s the real goal. It’s not about fame or any of that stuff.

In case you need permission…you can write a song 3 different ways & scratch them all. You can take one line from the bridge and insert it into the chorus of another song. Or you can let it sit for years just to return with a new perspective. ALL of this is acceptable and more.

Another thing I’m learning as a songwriter:
Be as loose as you can with choosing lyrics to accompany music. Try on several sets of lyrics. Don’t be afraid to switch them out at any moment. Words should compliment the melody not carry it.

Don’t be afraid to scrap it all and start over. Just cause you’re putting on the roof doesn’t mean you have to move in. It’s your creation. The bones might still be good or maybe you need to take it down to the concrete slab. Just trust yourself to know when things are right.

Ways of writing change. Let them. If you used to write just you and a guitar and this method no longer resonates it’s ok. Write however you can no matter how different it looks. “Writer’s block” might not be a wall, but a doorway into a new way of being creative

Hey, like what you like. Go from Beethoven to Burt Bacharach to Beyoncé. It’s really ok. Genres are a failed attempt at categorization. Music has no fences. If YOU like it then it’s cool. End of story. Music is too wonderful a gift to be used as a way to keep people out.

I love all these answers. For me, it’s about process. I’m addicted to the process of writing/recording a song and seeing it all come together. Also, it’s my way to process life, etc… It’s my attempt at making some sense of the human experience especially the pain of it all.
