Maybe we need a thread for all the folks considering applying to PhDs in the humanities/social sciences. PhDs: what was your first job & pay after graduating? I was a historical researcher and writer for an auction house. Pay: $16 CAD/hour.

some academics just describe things that already exist for a living, the bar is so low for certain people meanwhile others are asked to justify their humanity and existence w an academic argument we are not all doing the same job.

Imagine working your ass off for decades to get a doctoral degree to be told you can’t afford a basic ass lifestyle on your own. It’s such a disappointment.

Academic faculty jobs are regular jobs. Acting as if they are not is one reason they’ve been gutted. We aren’t special; we are workers.

My phone still autocorrects “and” to “ABD” because even after all these years it’s still traumatized.

I see so many wonderful and talented people leaving academia. Not because they "didn't make it," nor because they "couldn't hack it." But because the system now demands total sacrifice just for a shot. And for that, you need luck too. It's a lottery that looks like a meritocracy.

You want to thank Black women? Cancel student debt -- all of it. Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America. Save your words of appreciation. Policy is our love language.

Professors at top universities are lottery winners, but rarely acknowledge the role of luck in their success. Be skeptical when they give you advice suggesting that the path they took is a repeatable one. If you aspire to an academic research career, have a backup plan.
