I was being recruited for full-time and future management roles at the grocery store when I left to be a journalist in Cold Lake, which eventually led to running the Cold Lake Sun at 23 and a daily newspaper in Prince Albert at 24. There's no way I was really ready but I learned.

Thinking about a pre-journalism job today it still seems crazy that a "flagship" grocery store hired me at 19 with no retail experience for a vital "perpetual inventory" role because I was "good at computers." Luckily I'm detail oriented & work hard or it could have ended poorly.

Oof. Sad day for journalism - as an elementary school student I got my first bylines in a student section of the Oakville Beaver - and later started my career at a (postmedia) weekly in Alberta that has also shut down its newsroom/print edition. I feel for everyone out of work.
The move involves 605 layoffs, nearly two-thirds of the workforce. According to a breakdown of the jobs affected, 104 unionized employees, including 68 journalists have been laid off, with the rest coming from non-unionized job categories.
