Our results reveal how variation in sensory ecology, driven by habitat heterogeneity, influences optimal cooperative group size and mating success within a single population of wild animals🐬🐬🐬./6.

We show that the active space of a male vocalisation used in a reproductive context predicts the number of preferred alliance partners with whom individuals cooperate with over the longer term, ultimately contributing to male access to mating opportunities./5.

We combine this with long-term data on dolphin alliance behaviour to investigate how active space influences alliance group size and mating success./4.

By combining estimates of dolphin apparent source levels, ambient noise levels and high-resolution bathymetry data we model sound transmission and active space across our study site. /3.
