It has started! The Natural Hazard & Risk conference in Amsterdam. @PerfectSTORM_VU is represented by @rubenweesie with a poster on droughts & floods in Kenya and by me with an oral on storylines of drought-to-flood events. Looking forward to interactions with everyone here.

The Amazon rainforest doesn't just remove ~2 billions tons of CO2 every year. It also moves ~20 billions tons of water through evotranspiration, the so-called "flying rivers", critical for planetary balance. I wish more people knew this.

๐ŸšจNew paper alert! ๐Ÿšจ In our new study, we show that the co-existence of social groups with different risk attitudes influences the implementation of individual and collective adaptation actions to droughts and floods. More details here: https://t.co/TsEOYCyUzQ

Following the stories that flow from rivers I'm happy to be back in Iquitos with 2 MSc students doing their thesis on drought and flood policy effectiveness (Stefano), and on using serious games as a co-creation opportunity for rethinking adaptation measures (Senna). @VU_IVM

The necessity for the analysis of system-wide, short-term and long-term implications is already recognized for both drought and flood risk management separately. But we suggest that this should also be expanded to the study and management of drought and flood risk together. 4/5

In terms of impacts, there is clear evidence that drought-to-flood events cause more impacts than if the hazards would occur on their own. Examples are breaking levee systems and drought-to-flood related water quality problems. 3/5

We find that drought can increase subsequent flood occurrence and severity due to increased surface runoff, but it can also decrease subsequent flooding due to storage depletion. There is little evidence as to which process may generally be dominant. 2/5

New publication! ๐ŸŽ‰ Based on analysis of literature and a global assessment of historic cases, we show how drought can affect flood risk. We also assess under which circumstances drought-to-flood interactions can lead to increased or decreased risk. 1/5 https://t.co/J6hOG0Hu5c
