Oh my gosh, there's finally a convincing-looking replacement for LaTeX.
If this ends up being as good as it looks then it will be Christmas come early.
In one day - one day! - of going open source, the Typst typesetting system passed 5,000 stars on Github.
If you ever needed evidence that there is a real hunger for a TeX replacement, this is it.

I'd love to ditch latex, but do most conferences/journals not require latex submission rather than pdf?

Agreed, network effects in LaTeX are probably the main limiting factor right now.
FWIW many of the conferences in my field only want pdfs, so I might try recreating their templates in typst...

Yes please. People at do live webinars really often for people to actually be able to use these tools. And the best part, accessible HTML papers. :D
