Here's a Tick Tweet to remind everyone to prevent tick bites! COVID isn't the only pathogen out there to worry about. Here are 3 female Ixodes scapularis ticks (vector for Lyme disease) in unengorged, partially engorged, and fully engorged states. Yuck!

social media course - my first tweet with an animated gif! What is this parasite form that was aspirated from a liver cyst?
So not only do I get to celebrate my 600th Parasite Case of the Week today, but my awesome administrative assistant brought me THIS. A botfly (Cuterebra) in the cutest little tupperware container ever. Removed from a barn cat (who is now getting lots of love and care).

Clearly malaria - but what is the species? I always start with the size of the infected RBCs. Small/normal usually = Pf/Pm; large = Po/Pv. Stippling supports Po/Pv. This case shows an enlarged, somewhat oval-shaped RBC, stippling, and fimbriated edges, so most c/w P. ovale
The answer to the Parasite Case 707 is now up: Sarcocystis infection – very similar in appearance to Toxoplasma gondii in disseminated infections involving muscle, but with a different clinical presentation and epidemiology.

Based on the awesome responses I received on my Armadillo earring post, I’ve decided to start a new series: Pretty Parasites, Hosts, and Vectors . For this week: what parasites are acquired by ingestion of this organism?
