But her own suffering continued. The abuse in her household never stopped. Day after day, Milkha watched her endure blows and insults. Until one day, he could bear it no longer. 12/16.

It was Isher who saved him again. Quietly, she sold her gold earrings to raise the money for his release. That sacrifice pulled him back from the brink, steering him away from a criminal path. 11/16.

Shackled and humiliated, he spent ten days among thieves and dacoits, so disheartened that he even imagined becoming a hardened criminal himself. 10/16.

Soon, police patrols made the thefts dangerous. One day, travelling without a ticket, Milkha was caught. Unable to pay a fine of fifteen rupees, he was sentenced to three months in jail. 9/16.

At the same time, his own life was slipping into darkness. With friends at Shahdara railway station, he stole bags of sugar and rice from goods trains, selling them in the bazaar. 8/16.

For this she was rewarded with constant beatings and humiliation. For the young Milkha, it was agony to watch his beloved sister being crushed every day. 7/16.

Very soon, Milkha saw the reality of his sister’s life. Isher was treated cruelly by her in-laws. She woke at four in the morning to begin her endless chores — washing utensils, cooking, tending to her husband’s younger brothers, and working like an unpaid servant. 6/16.
