A small swing among about 2% of RCPsych members is certainly not significant. It acknowledges the care & thoughtfulness of all speakers. We need similar care in service provision. That would hugely reduce risk of people with mental ill-health ever thinking death the only option.
61% AGAINST after the debate; so I would call that a significant but not decisive swing in opinion after hearing the arguments with 410 members voting. #AssistedDying @rcpsych.

He was such a life force from whom so many benefited - patients and services as well as generations of trainee clinicians and researchers - he created spaces where people could thrive and develop. We must try hard to sustain that for him.
Really saddened to hear about Sir David Goldberg’s death earlier today. A giant of psychiatry has gone. His legacy in primary care psychiatry and social psychiatry will live forever. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP David, will miss you.🙏🏼.

- and how many people know that a recall doesn't just mean a few days while possible problems are investigated more fully and, where necessary, solutions put in place, but, t best, months back in prison with huge added admin & legal costs in moving forward.
Despite the #prisoncrisis, amazed to receive a call from a vulnerable young adult care leaver who has been told he is about to be recalled to prison because a flood in a multi-occupancy property he has just vacated has been attributed to him.

Adequate planning essential! More focus also needed on preventing imprisonment when community alternatives would be safer for them and us. For those with mental ill health, Mental Health Treatment Requirements may be an option

So true! - & a very important step would be to stop clinical labelling of anyone as a 'psychopath', a term with the same resonance as 'cretin' or 'imbecile. Maybe 'psychopathy' still has meaning, but even so we'd do better more specifically, e.g. for emotion recognition deficits.
Dr Jack Tomlin @jackltomlin on stigma, mental illness, "offenders," and forensic patients. Language matters, and we all must take care with how we speak. @iafmhs1 @IAFMHS_Student

Here's a prison space that could be freed in a very short time, given the will - unless too much damage has been done by the seeming injustice off this situation.
"Sixteen years for stealing a flower pot: the film about the IPP jail sentence ‘designed to bury you alive’". @shattenstone believes @SAMARIUN's film on the IPP sentence "might just be the most important film made in the UK this year": #JusticeForIPPs.

So, longer sentences and recent advice to arrest fewer peoples are working well, then?.
The prison population in England and Wales stands at 87,284. There are 107 more people in prison today than there were last week. By the prison service's own measure of safe and decent accommodation, there is room for only 79,615 people, the population is 7,669 above this level.

Such an important step. There will still be a lot to do to help everyone touched by these sentences, but this allows for better, safer futures if we continue working together. Much credit to everyone who has done so to get this far.
The Victims and Prisoners Bill has now been approved by both Houses of Parliament. When it comes into force it will create significant changes as to how #IPP licences can be ended. See my blog for @PrisonLawyrsAPL on the changes
