We are excited to share our new article now out in @commsbio:. How oscillatory (or โ€œrhythmicโ€) are neuronal oscillations? We developed a new way to measure rhythmicity and found that is well delineated in both brain anatomy and oscillation frequencies!

Finally, we extended the pACF approach into the time-frequency domain to analyze event-related modulations in rhythmicity and found that rhythmicity indeed was modulated during the visual task with dynamics distinct from those of stimulus locking and amplitude changes.

We then asked whether highly rhythmic oscillations would be better able to synchronize between brain areas. Indeed, we found a strong positive correlation between local rhythmicity and inter-areal synchronization both in silico and in vivo.

We also found that some rhythmicity spectra showed single and others multiple peaks and their cortical topographies were different in alpha and beta frequency bands. Thus unimodal and cross-frequency bimodal oscillations are unique characteristics of specific circuitries

Visualizing rhythmicity on brain anatomy showed that the frequency architecture of a human cortex is organized into well-localized gradients, or rather perhaps "frequency islands".

We computed the pACF lifetime for both SEEG and MEG resting-state data and found that the โ€œtruly oscillatoryโ€ oscillations are located in surprisingly narrow frequency ranges. For example, rhythmicity topology divides the canonical alpha and beta bands into three subbands.m

Typically, neural oscillations are operationalized using the power spectrum, but it does not quantify rhythmicity. To tap into rhythmicity directly we derived a phase autocorrelation function (pACF) that quantifies phase stability and yields a "pACF lifetime" for oscillations.
