Although Prince performed songs from the album throughout 1994 and 1995, he claimed that it would never be released, urging fans to petition Warner Bros. At the BRIT Awards in February of 1995, he stated: "In concert: perfectly free. On record: slave."

Happy 30th anniversary to "The Gold Experience," which was released on this day in 1995. Recorded during his contractual dispute with Warner Bros., the album's release was delayed because Warner Bros. would not grant him ownership of his master recordings.
