The hallmarks of the hipster era: people were finding ways to 1. Spend time together IRL 2. Participate in aesthetic distinction 3. Innovate while re-energizing traditions The decline of the hipster era is a loss. Craft is the antidote to slop.

The argument for a continuation of centralised UK government: "Central government has access to the most data, is least influenced by interest groups, and can rationally make decisions in the national interest that subnational governments can't" Actual centralised UK government:
genuinely such an abysmal story. how were the handsacre and euston legs of hs2 only saved bc of a last minute intervention by andy street in rishi's hotel room? this is banana republic shit, absolutely no way to run infrastructure projects

(personally i suspect that the practice of replacing 1980s heavily padded train seats with ironing boards does not, in fact, increase comfort, despite the boasts of train companies to the contrary)

Recieved wisdom was that the stupid small boards were a good idea because they slightly improve pedestrian flow but the disruption to wayfinding ended up vastly overriding the benefits - One wonders where else current recieved design wisdom is just, in practice, wrong
One of the worst decisions made by @networkrail to an already poorly managed station, by replacing its main departures screens with a hideous and overly distracting advertising screen. A before and after comparison - @GarethDennis @NetworkRailEUS #Euston #LondonEuston

In Manchester and hadn’t appreciated how something so simple - making all buses yellow - can really improve public space. Feels neater

not a fan of data centers taking over the entire economy but i don't like the water argument. 2.8 million gallons per day is about 8.59 acre-feet, or about three of these center-pivot irrigation fields if used to grow alfalfa in the summer. (plus irrigation water isn't returned!)

as far back as 494 AD the pope essentially declared "we revere him for deeds only known by God"

one thing completely ignored by crass "debate" [not really much of the sort to be had] about the england flag , and inevitable le epic reference to St. George himself, is how intriguingly little is known about the man and his deeds, esp precisely why and how he was martyred

we already have a body called an "integrated care board" which should do this btw
Best proposal I’ve heard: rebrand all councils as “Social Care Boards”, and most of council tax as a “Social Care Tax”, and hive off all other responsibilities that we think of councils performing - waste collection, road repairs, etc - to a completely new kind of local authority

i quite like its replacement - as glass towers go, pretty well executed. but tragic that the very cool original was lost (except for its basement, which with some changes still serves the new tower
Natwest Tower in Birmingham by John Madin, 1974. It was occupied for only 29 years, then stood empty, bar a few peregrine falcons, for more than a decade. It got replaced by a glass-clad 103 Colmore Row. What a waste!

In a 1964 text (that i unfortunately could only find in french), Adorno talks about an American producer's ideal audience: An adult with the mind of an 11 year old. This paragraph comes to mind whenever I see a movie and think to myself "what is the intended audience for this"
