In conclusion: a 5th wave might be looming because the assumption that the far right is stigmatized more than other party families might no longer be accurate. We should measure levels of stigmatization of far-right parties at the individual level and in the media.

The role of the established right remains unclear. The combination of exclusionary and adversarial strategies that should have prevented the electoral breakthrough of AfD and the SD proved insufficient. This does not mean mainstream parties play no role, but...it's complicated

Looking at AfD, Sweden Democrats, Chega, and VOX one can conclude that... πŸ’ A reputational shield that made them appear acceptable or they moderated their positions to build a respectable faΓ§ade. πŸ’ The media played a crucial role, providing visibility and legitimacy.

The literature suggests 3 mechanisms to explain the electoral breakthrough of far-right parties. 1) They manage to lower the stigma they face (reputational shield/moderation --> dΓ©diabolisation) πŸ‘Ή 2) The media accommodate them πŸ“Ί 3) Established parties accommodate them πŸ—£οΈ

I look at πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ήβ€”countries that saw the far right's electoral breakthrough much later than the rest of Europe. Under what conditions are far-right parties electorally successful in previously 'immune' countries? Let's implement a most different systems design...

How can we understand the electoral breakthrough of far-right parties in countries previously considered 'immune'? By looking at the role of the media and understanding how the far right can enjoy a reputational shield. New paper out on G&O πŸ”₯ https://t.co/iWmbxBvMSW
