What's pretty cool is there's now union-made sandwiches available at 10 locations and for catering in the Seattle area. We hope everyone shows them some love. Locations and catering info here: https://t.co/o8MXDYTTBU

Rolling back the minimum wage for tipped workers would be an unprecedented step backward for Seattle's progressive values. Businesses have had 10 years to prepare for this but want the city council to create a permanent sub-minimum wage at the 11th hour.

The proposed bill comes in response to alarm from restaurants over an upcoming increase next year and will likely anger labor advocates.

We know the Homegrown organizing and contract has inspired many, and we hope we continue to inspire more workers to stand up to make the jobs in the industry good jobs. Businesses may come and go, but the worker-led movement for good jobs is here to stay.

As it stands, we are asking Gillis and Homegrown to grant workers severance, continue their healthcare coverage for 6 months, and give workers priority hiring in other Gillis-owned companies.

We know the food service industry is tough, but we wish that Homegrown would have come to workers and the union to work with us to try to make operation of the company meet their measure of success.

While it may just be another business decision for Gillis, this one is impacting 158 workers who believed in the company and believed that these could be great jobs.

This closure follows multiple rounds of Gillis founding, acquiring and closing business ventures on the West coast. In 2015, Homegrown Partners raised $2.35 Million from investors, went on to acquire five businesses, including Pete’s Milk most recently in 2023, and planned to ↩️

"They both burst into tears. This may be a theoretical business decision for Brad Gillis, but for me and my co-workers, it’s about our paychecks—being able to pay our rent--and our healthcare."

“The way this decision was made and announced was inhumane,” said Homegrown worker Emily. “I pulled up the letter I received from Brad on my phone and showed it to my managers, and that’s how they learned our store was closing."

As you may have heard, Homegrown CEO Brad Gillis has decided to close 10 stores and permanently layoff 158 workers come September 15. Workers and Local 8 are disappointed in the decision and the lack of communication leading up to it.

This is union busting. The company told workers they were profitable in all stores and are now saying that’s not true while pivoting industries away from their cafes that won a new contract and the reinstating of a union leader following a 100+ day strike.
On July 18, the Seattle artisanal sandwich shop chain Homegrown notified the state that it would be laying off 158 workers and closing 10 of its 12 locations, effective September 15. This comes months after it reached an agreement with its workers for better pay and conditions.

Homegrown workers recently won a groundbreaking contract that addresses heat (and air quality). HG worker Zane told @Grist “Heat pay is great, but we would actually like the workplace to be a reasonable, safe temperature year round.” #1u
