Today is the 7th anniversary of this short Twitter thread about an amazing old document we have in our Archives. It's now another 7 years older than it was when we wrote this back in 2018. And we're still keeping it safe because that's what Archives do. π.
In one of our archive strong rooms there is a shelf. The shelf does not contain the most exciting or interesting item in the archive but it does contain something amazing. A thread.

There are no physical meetings to attend so anyone can join in, from anywhere in the world - everyone just listens to the same Audiobook, then sends us a rating and short review via email. You can find out more at:

The Audio Waves Book Club at Orkney Library is a book club where the members listens to Audiobooks and eAudiobooks instead of reading printed books

Obviously we can't suggest that anyone bids for the beautiful Silver Darlings #BookBench and sends it back to us so we are absolutely NOT suggesting that. Even though it looked amazing out the front. And we have a Book Bench shaped space there now. We are NOT suggesting that.

Thanks to Species on the Edge for coming along last Saturday for a drop-in session about gardening for pollinators. π.Great to see people finding out more about wildflowers while exploring our Interactive Flora Trail. AND we were left with some wonderful #LEGO bees! π±πΌπΈπ¦π

This was the misty morning view from the ferry as #BookyMcBookface sailed north to the beautiful #Orkney island of Stronsay this morning. It's like a Turner painting. Or the kind of scene a pirate ship would emerge from. π΄ββ οΈ

Today we'll be officially launching our new Interactive Orcadian Flora Trail, created to highlight the diverse native plant life found in #Orkney. The trail is also an opportunity to hear Orcadian dialect, with flower poems created and recorded by the Orkney Voices group.
We have an announcement. Orkney Library & Archive has been awarded Β£11,000 from the Public Library Improvement Fund (PLIF) to create an interactive, sensory trail of #Orkney flora that will be installed in front of the library in the spring and summer of 2025. π±πͺ΄βͺοΈπ»πΏ

We were delighted to meet @shelaghswanson today - the artist behind our amazing @BookBenchTrail Book Bench in support of @ClanNow. Inspired by the novel The Silver Darlings by Neil Gunn. Shelagh came to visit this morning with her parents and the very cute Charlie the dog! β€οΈ

If your kids are struggling with going back to school then it's definitely not a new thing. This little girl was going to school in Evie, #Orkney in 1920 which is 105 years ago. She doesn't look terribly keen. #PhotographicArchives

Today is #NationalPotatoDay in the U.S. so here's an Archive photograph which shows a man and a horse gathering tatties in #Orkney in 1933. π₯. In other news, we will be CLOSING at 5pm tonight, instead of 6pm. (we promise the early closure is NOT #NationalPotatoDay related)
