UPDATE: Two months into bargaining for our 2nd contract, our hedge fund owners @McClatchy are holding healthcare hostage and refusing to invest in our journalism. We now have less than a month to come to a full contract agreement, or our members face steep healthcare increases.

As we return to the bargaining table today, we are prepared to negotiate an agreement on health insurance that would save money for employees and the company -- as we have been for weeks. Health insurance isn’t a bargaining chip. It’s a basic right.

We are entering our tenth week of bargaining, and thus far @mcclatchy has attempted to leverage healthcare in order to extract other concessions. Those tactics are gross and will not be tolerated.

This morning we sent an open letter signed by @McClatchy employees around the country to company leadership demanding that they provide affordable health insurance to their employees and stop using healthcare as a bargaining chip.

Tell @McClatchy that you’re not okay with one of the largest newspaper chains in North America underpaying its employees as the cost of living continues to rise in Florida.

Our members are dedicated to working toward a contract that offers fair wages and affordable healthcare for every member. It’s the least @McClatchy can do for the journalists who work hard every day to cover elections, hurricanes and everything in between.

We believe the hardworking journalists in South Florida & Bradenton deserve more than the scraps @McClatchy is bringing to the table this holiday season. And we believe our community deserves better from its local newspaper than the company’s cost-cutting approach.

This week our members showed the company our distaste for their shady bargaining tactics and skimpy offers by signing a Thanksgiving themed card and sharing a visual representation of what the company has been bringing to the table.

@McClatchy is now saying it won’t make any economic offers until all other parts of the contract are agreed upon. If we don’t reach a deal by the end of Dec, our members face huge healthcare premium increases – by as much as 58% — since the company refuses to pay its fair share.

On one proposal, @McClatchy offered a pool of money to split between members of @elnuevoherald — Spanish-language journalists who have been vastly underpaid for decades. The result would have been a raise of less than $1,000 per person.

Our union members at the @MiamiHerald, @elnuevoherald and @BradentonHerald are committed to landing a deal for fair wages and healthcare, but @McClatchy continues to make unacceptable offers.
