This is rhetoric and a scare tactic. "If you don't read Genesis completely woodenly and as a science textbook, you're on a slippery slope to becoming a liberal." I wish this wasn't the norm in Christian fundamentalist circles, but it is. Many lose their faith because of it too.
The doctrine of creation is usually the first area of compromise whenever a denomination/church/individual becomes liberal.
