“cigarettes are a great social lubricant” no i actually find it pretty disruptive that you have to go stand outside for a few minutes every half hour while we’re hanging out

is there a field of study that the average layperson consistently overestimates their own understanding of more than linguistics

Slugs aren't totally peaceful critters, they can fight for food by "throwing" their mouth parts at each other. And it's quite ridiculous to observe. https://t.co/fIlUn60GKm

i know it sounds dumb to your ear. that’s because you learned to speak a certain way and have a visceral reactionary distaste for what you perceive as *your* language being spoken wrong. but it’s just change, and nobody gets to control the way language changes.

we should endeavor to describe the way our language is used, not prescribe how it ought to be used. the latter is, as was pointed out in the replies, the domain of colonization. language is not capable of devolving and suggesting it can carries a lot of terrible implications.

this has happened in english many times before. we no longer say “halp” for the past tense of “help” we say “helped”, for instance. (this slide is taken from a presentation on analogical change in english strong verbs by linguist Lasse Pröbsting, i will link it below)

specifically this analogical change reminds you of overregularization, where children will extend a grammatical rule and apply it to irregular forms. but if these forms stick, and are used widely enough, eventually the irregular form will become archaic.

this is an example of an established phenomenon called analogical change. it sounds childish to u, but that’s bc many language changes come from childhood acquisition. u are noticing analogical change happening and reacting negatively bc u have a prescriptivist view of language.
Ok but consider yesterday a first grader said "eated" and "hadded" to me. Thats what you sound like. A child.

Update: He was fired illegally & now we officially have zero income. The phones will be shut off soon and we're both expecting calls from potential jobs over the next couple weeks. I need to make $300 by the end of the week to keep them on. If you can help it's needed. Thank you.
