More research into the Serbian retreat of 1915. The Accursed Mountains are stunning, but very very remote. My opanci were marvellous, and early signs of frostbite have been avoided by beating my bare feet with birch twigs. So that’s good.

The Serbs did not march on their own over the mountains - with them went the international military and medical missions that had deployed to Serbia in 1914 and 1915. It is a most remarkable, heroic, tragic and little known story.

The events culminated in what became called the 'Serbian Golgotha' - where rather than surrender to the advancing German, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian Armies, the Serbs decided to retreat over the Albanian and Montenegrin mountains to the Adriatic Coast. Thousands persished.

For anyone interested I will be giving a free online talk (as part of the Serbian Council of Great Britain'Serbian Month' programme of events) on Monday 9th February at 7pm. The talk is about the 'Second Serbian Campaign' that was taking place 110 years ago during the Great War.

It was a real honour to have had the opportunity to take part in the RBL 30th Anniversary of the end of the war in Bosnia at the weekend, held at the National Arboretum. It was an opportunity to reflect on events we experienced over 30 years ago and be reunited with old friends.

Today will be an emotional day, as veterans from Bosnia gather at the National Arboretum to mark the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord. There will be people here who I have not seen for over 30 years. Honoured to be part of the official ceremony too.

One of the forgotten chapters of the ‘Forgotten Front’ of the Great War. The 10th Irish Div was sent to Serbia in 1915 in their struggle against the Central Powers. They were outnumbered and decimated by the cold and the Bulgarians. The Serbs have never forgotten their sacrifice.
