25 years ago today the IRA attack took place inside the Childrens’ hospital in Belfast as we visited our very ill son Andrew. Video recalling that evening below
Northern Ireland being held in the Customs Union without Great Britain is an obvious breach of the Principle of the Consent in the Belfast Agreement. This would store up problems in Northern Ireland long after Brexit is resolved.
Nothing new in what Barnier is offering.
This is a retreat back to the proposal of an Northern Ireland only backstop previously rejected by all sides in the House of Commons.
If the Prime Minister's deal remains the same then the problem remains the same.
The backstop is the problem - it divides the United Kingdom.
Defend the Union, Deliver Brexit.
“The true purpose of the “backstop” is now in the open for all to see.
Those who eagerly supported the backstop as the best of both worlds can now see the error of that assessment.
It was neither temporary nor an insurance policy.”
@DUPleader
Utterly reckless by the SNP to talk about a return to violence in Northern Ireland.
No political party wants a hard border on our Island.
Neither we allow internal borders within the United Kingdom.
The woman in the picture with Adams and Biden was notorious for being wanted in the UK for IRA terrorist crimes. Biden is no impartial upholder of either justice or the political process in Northern Ireland
Theresa May still insists that what she has negotiated is a good deal.
She should remember that it would already have been consigned to the bin but for her pulling the vote in December.
I’m honoured and humbled to be nominated to the House of Lords. Thank you to everyone for the kind words and best wishes! Delighted to be able to continue to serve the people of Northern Ireland- big challenges ahead but let’s keep Northern Ireland moving forward.
This is a Sinn Fein MP with his eulogy for a terrorist murderer. He burnt Yvonne Dunlop alive. She was 26. Her 9 year old son was with her but escaped. The terrorist chose to die. His victim had no choice. SF Assembly leader says there was “no alternative”. Barbaric
Today, I have resigned as Brexit Secretary. I cannot in good conscience support the terms proposed for our deal with the EU. Here is my letter to the PM explaining my reasons, and my enduring respect for her.
Braverman reveals PM gave her "firm assurances" that he would "deliver the NI Protocol...Bill in [its] existing form & timetable". Instead he accepted an Irish Sea Border and wants unionists to do so also. No chance
EU rips up Protocol when it suits them to impose hard border in Ireland. Genie now out of the bottle. All their arguments on NI exposed as hypocrisy on stilts. UK Govt must act decisively to rid us of barriers between NI and GB by ( now plainly unnecessary) Protocol provisions.
The Brexit Secretary had asked for a speaking slot this year to outline the Government’s Agreement with the European Union, but given his recent inability to recall what he actually negotiated, we politely declined.

Following today’s vote in Parliament we must continue to work to implement the democratic decision to leave the EU and do so in a way that strengthens our United Kingdom.
The Irish Prime Minister must explain why two Northern Ireland trawlers have been impounded by an Irish Navy warship.
I have already raised the matter with our Government.
These heavy handed tactics show Ireland are fair weather friends to NI.
Our message to Leo is simple.
He should reflect on his comments and his intransigent approach.
He is destined to go down in history as the Taoiseach who restored a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic because his friends in Brussels will insist on it.
After a campaign of personally targeting a female unionist candidate in a disingenuous attempt to make it a “get the other side out” vote, both these SDLP candidates lost their seats….
@DianeDoddsMLA
won hers.
#AE22
Despite the evidence of mounting opposition to her deal, the PM has signed up to it without asking for a single change.
Some people may regard that as being resilient.
Most will see it as further proof that No 10 just doesn’t listen.
By talking about troops on the border, Leo Varadkar is being as irresponsible as those building wooden customs huts, dressing actors in trench coats and smashing concrete brick walls on the border.
It's time for cool heads & responsible language.
We will continue to use our position within Parliament and with the Government to argue strongly the case for Northern Ireland and the integrity of the United Kingdom.
We remain consistent in judging all Brexit outcomes against our clear unionist principles.
Devastating from AG ....The legal advice just published proves NI would be in full EU Customs Union while GB is not. Goods passing from GB to NI will be subject to a declaration process. “GB is essentially treated as a third country by NI for goods passing from GB into NI”
Today is the 40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War. We salute the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces who liberated the people of the Falklands.
#LiberationDay
A clear reassurance to victims today.
“There is no moral equivalence between a bystander badly injured in a terrorist explosion through no fault of their own, and the people who manufactured the bomb, placed the bomb, and detonated the bomb.”
As we have always said, negotiations with the EU inevitably go down to the wire and the Government has been far too willing to capitulate before securing the necessary changes which would get an agreement through the House of Commons. 1/2
“The Democratic Unionist Party will join Labour and other opposition parties on Monday in a bid to force the Government to publish its legal advice on Brexit.”
“Mr Coveney’s rejection of a reasonable offer is paving the road for a no deal exit because unionism will not allow Northern Ireland to be trapped at the whim of Dublin or the EU. We will not buy that.”
@DUPleader
Paragraph 7: “Goods passing from GB to NI will be subject to a declaration process”. Ie on customs. NI stay in THE Customs Union, GB in A new customs union with EU.
The overall context of the Withdrawal Agreement is, as the Attorney General said, a deeply unattractive, unsatisfactory presentation.
He needs to therefore, rather than recommended this agreement, recommend that it be rejected.
Bin the Backstop!
Most will see it as further proof once again that No 10 just doesn’t listen.
No wonder even the Chancellor of the Exchequer said it’s not good for our economy, it’s not good for our Union.
We will not support a deal which is detrimental to Northern Ireland, which damages our economy in the process and which tears up the Belfast Agreement safeguards upon which the power sharing arrangements in Northern Ireland depend.
Do not claim that we are equal citizens and then put in place barriers between our citizenship, between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. We are prepared to make sacrifices to move Northern Ireland forward, but we will not sacrifice our equal citizenship within the UK
Congratulations
@BorisJohnson
. Looking forward to continuing our discussions on achieving our shared objectives to advance the Union, deliver Brexit and restore devolved government in NI.
What is the Government hiding? It is refusing to tell us which EU laws are removed under its deal. Isn't this because the vast bulk of EU law in the Protocol will remain in place for Northern Ireland with no consent? My question in Parliament today.
Isn’t it time they stood up to Dublin (and for themselves) over the Protocol/Windsor Framework as well? Time to stop craven acceptance of foreign jurisdiction over NI
Gloves are off in Anglo-Irish diplomatic relations.📍
London govt now publicly challenging Dublin:
“Irish Government should urgently clarify the number of criminal prosecutions brought in Ireland since 1998 relating to Troubles cases”
Extraordinary, given once-close relations.
I’ve had the honour of serving the people of Northern Ireland for 32 years through the darkest days of our past.
I count it as an honour and privilege.
You may disagree with me,but please do not insult the people who placed their trust in me by saying they aren’t my priority
@NigelDoddsDUP
@eastantrimmp
That just sums DUP up.
A snide remark.
No mention of NI people, protecting jobs, prosperity, GFA.
Families are anxious in the mouth of Christmas about jobs and impact of Brexit uncertainty. And all you can say is "it was a bizarre day". NI people aren't your priority.
“Given the fact that the necessary changes we seek to the backstop have not been secured...
We will not be supporting the Government if they table a fresh meaningful vote.”
Strip away all the speculation, briefings and spin about the Government’s deal, the thing that matters is whether Northern Ireland will continue to be governed by EU law and subject to EU legal jurisdiction.
On many occasions both the PM and the Brexit Secretary said the backstop would be time limited. This is critical. If it isn’t then the UK including Northen Ireland would be trapped in unacceptable arrangements unless and until the EU decide otherwise
The Irish Sea border has not been removed by the Windsor deal. Those trading with Northern Ireland from other parts of the UK must still fulfil EU requirements even in "green lane" including a level of checks determined by the EU.
We will happily put our views to the people… I am quite certain that we would be returned in greater numbers than we are today.
Prime Minister – Bin the Backstop.
These people are pro Union. The real problem is the Withdrawal Agreement and the failure to get necessary changes to the backstop. This is the Govt’s responsibility.
Minister pins DUP’s
#Brexit
deal rejection on
@BorisJohnson
&
@DominicRaab
“The DUP interviewed Boris and Raab and decided they were not really unionists. That’s why they withheld their support for the deal.”
The Windsor Framework is a good deal for the people of Northern Ireland
✅ Removes the Irish Sea Border
✅ Restores the free-flow of trade
✅ Protects NI place in our Union
Today’s vote on the Stormont Brake ensures power is put back in the hands of NI and Westminster
Exc:
King Charles was lined up by Number 10 to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tomorrow - just as highly contentious negotiations over the Northern Ireland Protocol were poised to come to a head
Some fear “misjudgment” dragging the King into poltics
For all the Prime Minister’s promises and pledges the legal advice is crystal clear.
In her words, no British Prime Minister could ever accept such a situation...
The problems with the backstop have been widely vocalised - but Britain “essentially treated as a third country by NI for goods passing from GB to NI" is the one that’s gonna hurt today.
In the blizzard of spin, propaganda and bullying to be employed against unionists on the “deal”, remember the same people told us the original Protocol should be accepted. They were wrong.
Protocol talks are being dragged out with little prospect of an outcome which comes near to meeting
@duponline
6 tests. UKG in retreat on Art 16 despite conditions being met long ago. UKG moving away from its own command paper on meds. If UKG won’t act, unionists must….and soon
Rather than a roadshow selling the fundamentally flawed Withdrawal Agreement, I would prefer the Government would listen to MPs on all sides of the House & finally acknowledge the backstop is dangerous for Northern Ireland and for the entire United Kingdom.
Health, education, infrastructure and policing are all of far greater importance than the preconditions laid down by a minority party within Northern Ireland.
It is the public who are being punished because of Sinn Fein’s narrow agenda.
The proposed deal would give the EU unprecedented powers over the United Kingdom.
The UK's future as a strong, independent trading nation is under imminent jeopardy.
Time to bin the Backstop.
This is a difficulty of the Prime Minister’s own making.
The reaction by the EU is unsurprising.
They are doing what they always do.
The key question is whether the Prime Minister will stand up to them or whether she will roll over as has happened previously.
Parliament has mandated the Prime Minister to seek a replacement of the backstop.
The European Union know exactly what is required to achieve a deal which Parliament can support.
It's time for Dublin and Brussels to be in a deal-making mode.
Vote has been pulled because it would have been overwhelmingly defeated.
Deferring the vote is only of any use if the Government is prepared to go to Brussels and insist on necessary changes.
Few people accepted this was the best deal. PM’s actions today prove that.
He will go down as one of the most unhelpful leaders of recent years in terms of attitudes towards unionists, and in terms of building better relationships between unionists and the south.
The criminal murderers who carried out terrible crimes against innocent people being honoured by Sinn Fein. Traumatic for victims and obscene in every respect. Those who laud SF appear very silent about this
Sammy Wilson setting out how the Protocol/Windsor Framework leaves NI under EU jurisdiction thus rendering protections of Rwanda Bill useless in NI. The Irish Sea Border is not just about trade. It must go.
The Prime Minister received a strong mandate from Parliament to seek legally binding changes to the draft Withdrawal Agreement.
That is where her focus must lie.
She must stand by her commitments to the House of Commons.
PM repeats she is seeking legal changes to the backstop - not seeking to ditch it - and said several times she was determined to keep to March 29th deadline
Sinn Fein leaders today eulogise and praise these murderers and Michelle O’Neill says there was “no alternative” Depraved and despicable position taken by hypocrites who lecture everyone else about human rights
'Why Warrington? Why a shopping street? And why the day before Mother's Day?'
Colin Parry whose 12 year old son Tim died along with 3 year old Johnathan Ball in the IRA Warrington bomb spoke to
#BBCBreakfast
30 years to the day since it happened
The PM gave a commitment in the House today that “a backstop that would see NI carved off in the EU’s customs union and parts of the single market.......” is something “I could never accept”. She must hold to this.
The basic nonsense of the Protocol/Framework is that it's ok to put barriers between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, but nowhere else. That is unacceptable
Those attempting to use the hard won peace in Northern Ireland for electoral gain or to block Brexit should be ashamed of themselves.
Maybe they could outline who is going to carryout the violence they are talking up?
