Some thoughts for @SluggerOToole on the challenges facing the Orange Institution—Drumcree, the East Belfast Somme parade, and more. We can’t demand respect for our traditions while demeaning them ourselves. The Orange Institution’s biggest enemy is itself.

The DUP's inauguration decline is a mistake. Peter Robinson attended a previous one on Remembrance Day. There's speculation that this is in retaliation for President Higgins' NI centenary snub, but two wrongs don't make a right. They should have led on this issue and sent a rep.
DUP confirms it will not send a representative to the Irish presidential inauguration. https://t.co/o6uN8ecb25

I've always respected the Irish Government's tradition of sending a representative to lay a wreath in Enniskillen on Remembrance Sunday. It's an extremely meaningful gesture of peace and remembrance.
I was honoured, as Taoiseach, to represent the Government and lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Enniskillen. A deeply moving event to remember those who have fallen in past wars, and in particular those who were killed in the Enniskillen bombing in 1987.

When my Great, Great Uncle died in 1917 (the second son to die at the front in WW1) his mother wrote this in a local Derry paper #RemembranceSunday

Rewatching the superb Band of Brothers. The series brilliantly captures the true events of Easy Company's incredible journey during WWII. The courage shown by Dick Winters and his men is absolutely phenomenal. The survivors' testimonies included are both powerful and poignant.

Depressing and wrong from the TUV. Remembrance Sunday is universal and should be above political stunts. Thousands of Irish Nationalists gave their lives in both World Wars; it is right for Sinn Féin and all parties to remember their sacrifices. This is a shared legacy.
TUV deputy leader Ron McDowell has said for a second year that he will not attend a Remembrance Day event at Belfast City Hall because of the presence of First Minister Michelle O’Neill. https://t.co/EjPcuI6iNB

The fact that the presidential inauguration is on Armistice Day is unfortunate. The 11th of November is a sombre day on which the state ought to be honouring Ireland's war dead like the rest of Europe will be. This should take precedence. #Remembrance

I think if the option is permitted, the DUP should send a representative to the inauguration.

Emma Little-Pengelly was in a no-win situation. She'll be attacked for not attending, yet a senior Unionist snubbing Remembrance Day with its multiple engagements, would have been deemed as grossly offensive and would have been a resignation matter.

This is shocking from the Belfast Telegraph — they’ve published an article with a headline about Gavin Robinson that is, at best, misleading and verging on defamatory. The Belfast Telegraph must clarify their position, retract and issue an apology.
I have never equivocated over my condemnation of violence, including targeted attacks on Party offices of Alliance or anyone else. The Belfast Telegraph can not stand over this journalism. It is defamatory and should be removed.

Belfast city centre is in serious decline, unsafe, unclean, derelict buildings and businesses struggling. Instead of tackling these issues, councillors are spending time debating foreign policies that are well outside their remit. This is frustrating, Belfast should be the focus!
Belfast City Council has halted its meeting tonight because councillors from SF, SDLP, Greens and PBP walked out in protest after the (DUP) Mayor refused to allow discussion of the visit to Israel by unionist politicians (including Cllr Ron McDowell).

This isn’t even shocking anymore — it’s very much the norm, and people have become desensitised to it. It’s hard not to conclude that parts of the UK have become deeply unsafe, and this shouldn’t be accepted as normal.

I disagreed with Paul Givan’s trip to Israel — it was deeply insensitive and inappropriate. However, the no-confidence motion is a cynical, hypocritical charade, driven by an MLA who rejoiced after the October 7 terrorist attack that killed 1,200. None of this benefits NI.

While I’ve been critical of Heather Humphreys’ campaign, it’s wrong to dismiss the sectarian abuse directed at her and her family. This wasn’t just “a few eejits” online — it exposed a deeper problem, made worse by the silence of those who should have spoken out.
Fine Gael presidential candidate Heather Humphreys said her family was subject to “awful sectarian abuse” during the campaign. Ms Humphreys is a Presbyterian who was raised on a rural farm near the border. Read more: https://t.co/wzm5xp23Sk

It’s too soon to write off Alliance, but they do have issues. They’ve promised much and delivered little. Their default is to blame everyone else. Executive performances have been abysmal, they hate scrutiny, and their ongoing attacks on Unionism is alienating Unionist voters.
EXCLUSIVE: Alliance falls to 5-year low in @LucidTalk poll as DUP, UUP & Greens rise. SF still comfortably ahead but is at 3-year low🧵 🟢SF 25% (-1) 🔶DUP 18% (+1) ⬛️TUV 13% (unchanged from August) 🔷UUP 12% (+1) 🟥SDLP 11% (-) 🟡Alliance 11% (-1) https://t.co/ocpxBINap2 (1/2)

There’s nothing to celebrate about the Soldier F ruling — and certainly nothing to gloat over. The judge’s verdict was damning of the regiment. The Bloody Sunday victims, like so many from the Troubles, will never see justice. A stark reminder of how victims have been failed.

Many politicians don’t want to touch immigration. But after the alleged rape of a ten-year-old girl in Dublin—who was in care—and with the suspect already under a deportation order, they can’t dodge this anymore. Political failure will be seen as fueling tonight’s violence.

The ongoing delays in the Donaldson trial raise serious concerns. It appears that the legal system, via medical reports, is being manipulated to stall justice. This situation cannot be allowed to continue, and the next trial date must stand.
The trial of former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife Lady Donaldson on charges relating to alleged historical sex offences is to be delayed, a judge has confirmed. Read more: https://t.co/e4zCtttra7

Another example of justice failed. One of the individuals, Tucker McCaffrey is a known criminal in Fermanagh and a menace to the community with approximately 300 convictions for everything from violent assaults to robberies but **almost** always escapes jail. Make it make sense.
