Emma Shih, a great subtle & comedic animator on
#SpiderVerse
, shared some of the video reference that she shot. Such appealing performances that translated so well onto the characters!

(1/10) I was asked recently - "What was the most difficult shot you animated on Spiderverse?" My answer came spilling out and surprised me actually... A thread...
One of the great creative challenges for
#AcrossTheSpiderVerse
was giving 100s of different Spiders unique motion signatures.
For Pavitr, we looked to one of the oldest known martial arts, Kalaripayattu, which originates from the Indian state of Kerala over 2000 years ago.
Originally in these shots, the Spiders were visualized as being spread out on the wall, but my Supervisor wanted to see them closer together. As I moved them closer while keeping their ability to move their limbs, it gradually evolved into this spider-like shape. 🕷️
#SpiderVerse
My absolute favorite sequence of animation from the past year (or so).
An inspired piece of art, music, animation, & editing - crown jewel of Arcane's first season.
With it being the 20 year anniversary of the Iron Giant's release in theaters, I was reminded of this clip that is super funny to frame thru!
I love it when animators put frames in like this that you feel when you watch but are hard to see without actually slowing it down :)
Before we had a final Wiles, I made a temp version for this early 3D test by modding Miles from ITSV.
Building from idea that Wiles needs to get around w/o being Spider-Man, we asked the question, "What if Wiles and Aaron needed EACH OTHER to get around?"
#AcrossTheSpiderVerse
(10/10) So this was the hardest shot, not for its complexity or technical challenges, but for its emotional toll. All said tho, it was an honor to work with Miles in his moment of deep despair.
As my sup. put it, “It’s rare we get to work w/ this level of pathos in animation.”
This shot in Gwen's
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
flashback was basically complicated shadow puppetry. We didn't have a Lizard model, so I had to heavily modify the Green Goblin's rig to look like the Lizard from Gwen's comics and gradually switch it out with Peter Parker.
#SpiderVerse
This animation by Derek Esparza, was one of the first tests done for
#SpiderVerse
Its focus was exploring different ways to visualize quick motion since the film would not use motion blur. It also went on to serve as the inspiration and foundation of the backstory running shots.
It should be noted that this is not a marketing image for 'The Mitchells Vs. The Machines', but an actual still-frame from one of the many amazing 2D/3D hybrid shots!
When you're given a hero built like 2099, the tendency is to stand him up straight, back arched, chest out - but we wanted something more distinct.
Miguel's posture was inspired by Stringer Bell from 'The Wire' - A character who exudes power w/o flexing.
#AcrossTheSpiderVerse
At times on
#SpiderVerse
an animator would have a good feel for a character & they'd film video for a run of shots and pass it to the team to use as a starting point. Here's Kiran Babla's acting for Miles in front of the school!

⭐️Fun Fact (and spoiler alert!)⭐️ The two Peters in
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
were referred to in the studio as "RIPeter" and "Burrito Peter" to keep it clear who we were talking about during conversations/animation rounds/etc...
#SpiderVerse
(4/10) But I suppose as the years passed and I digested my experiences working on the film, it was this run of shots - Jeff, Miles, & Aaron in the alleyway - that suddenly came leaping to mind when I was asked the question this time:
(8/10) It took around 3 months to animate these shots. Which was 3 months spent putting myself through my feelings of grief daily in the hopes that some of it would come through in Miles’s performance.
Perhaps now on the 10 year anniversary of 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' it's a fun time to remind people the FLDSMDFR makes an appearance at the end of Spiderverse! 🕷️🍔
This was by far the most technically challenging shot I animated for
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
taking ~2 months to finish. As an animator it was really fun to work with all the different animation styles that the characters brought with them from their own universes!
#Spiderverse
On 'The Mitchells Vs. The Machines' we developed a super neat tool that could cut the Pal Max Prime robots at any place on the body, separate it, & put it back together again.
This allowed us animators to hand-craft every frame of their transformations.
(1/14) A lot went into animating these shots of the
#SpiderVerse
crew hiding from Miles's roommate, Ganke. It was a collaborative process, went through a lot of iteration, & it was also quite a technical challenge.
Here's a thread about how the animation came together! 🕷️
(6/10) Actually, this moment was initially envisioned with Jeff’s gun aimed directly at Miles, but it was ultimately deemed to be too controversial and we decided to have the gun in the “high ready” position instead.
(5/10) As co-dir. Bob Persichetti expressed to me: Miles's life is falling apart. He's been betrayed by Aaron - his longtime idol, & w/o reconciliation, he’s dead and Miles blames himself for it. On top of that his dad is about to find out that he’s Spiderman and blame him too.
While it was conceived of & filmed as one long continuous shot -- the back half of the 'Across the
#Spiderverse
' teaser was broken down into 5 shots animated by Byung Choi, Philip Rudolph,
@siggiorri
, myself, and David Han. 🕷️
This was one of my favorite moments of watching
#SpiderVerse
with a new audience on opening day!
Having worked on the film, it was no longer a surprise. But the collective theater-wide gasp of shock was such a satisfying affirmation that the setup and reveal were done so well!
On this 10 year anniversary of the release of 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs', I'm reminded of how blown away I was in the theater to see such stylized character designs & animation.
I remember thinking, "We can do this with 3D...??"
To save money animating vehicles in Disney's '101 Dalmatians', they created "cel-shaded" model cars, filmed them, and then xeroxed the frames onto the cels which were then painted!

(7/10) Needless to say, it’s a devastating emotional load on Miles. And to try to put myself in his shoes, I dug back to when I lost my dad suddenly & unexpectedly just after college -- Remembering the crushing feeling of getting the midnight call to find out he was gone.
Not sure if it was noticed in the audience, but we had a brand new web rig built off of the AMAZING technology created for the ropes in The Sea Beast!
We had WAY more flexibility and control over our web animations in
#AcrossTheSpiderVerse
compared the first movie 🕸️
While the rest of the world moved towards computerization, Richard Williams and his team continued to do incredible work like this with pencil & paper.
The Thief and the Cobbler (1993)
Thank you to everyone who is going to see

!!! We poured everthing we had into it and are so excited to finally share it with the world!!!

I don't really have a set style of animation...and it's always fun to try something new or different!
Here's 4 examples of
#4styles
of animation that I've done:
A) Modern Cartoony
B) Classical Cartoony
C) Stylized Realism
D) Graphic Abstract
To achieve this composition I had to do a lot of cheating to keep Ham from being obscured by Noir's body, so if you look at his pose from the side it looks something like this.
While it's hidden in the standard 2D version, keep your out for it in a 3D screening 🤣

Not only did “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” director
@michaelrianda
put family photos of his crew in the credits of the film - he also printed us out and took us to the Oscars last night.
It was a pleasure & an honor to work with someone who cares so deeply for his crew ❤️
This
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
shot animated by Andrew Perez adds a new sound effect to the
#SpiderVerse
to go alongside🕸️THWIP!🕸️
The scientist is a likeness of Andrew himself, and look at that squash on his head when the bagel impacts 🤣
This was the longest shot in
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
. I animated Jefferson & the talented
@Martin_C_Amoros
animated Miles. Taking nearly 2 months to animate, Martin and I began by sliding 2 cylinders around in 3D space to explore the harmony between Miles, Jeff, and the two cameras.
For me, animation is always rewarding, but isn't necessarily always fun.
However... the Posey's "Butterfly Formation" shot in 'The Mitchells Vs. The Machines' was PURE fun from start to finish!
Working from the hilarious boards by
@billybobmartinz
was an absolute blast!!
To ensure the anim team had an intuitive way to draw on their work no matter their preferred work flow, we built two ways to draw:
1: The spline-based Ink Line Tool. Upgraded from the first film.
2: A new pipeline to Blender for hand-drawn sketching.
#AcrossTheSpiderVerse
I love this
#IntoTheSpiderVerse
shot by Eric Chou not just because the animation is insanely good, but because he used a lot of the tools the animators had such as Ink Lines, Clone Stamps, & the tool dev'd by
@hf_rosa
to help us achieve 2's on a moving background🕷️

Occasionally, 'The Mitchells Vs. The Machines' director
@michaelrianda
would shoot video reference to help us get the performance juuuuust right. 😂
Animated by the multi-talented rigger/animator - JQ Park!
(1/3) Spanish Animator, Eduardo Quintana (
@qp_edu
), created a stunning animation of Richard Williams's "Lesson One" back in 2017.
Created over a year & 1/2, he used audio from a masterclass delivered at Blue Sky to bring the book to life.

This CG adaption of Lupin III looks promising!!
With the passing of the creator, Kazuhiko Kato, a few months ago, it sits in a similar position as Spiderverse did with Stan Lee. I hope the film can do the series justice!
The
#Mulan
remake seems a little less like a shot-by-shot remake and more of a re-imagining of the cinematography which feels closer to the source.
It reminded of me House of Flying Daggers & The Forbidden Kingdom.
I wonder who will be doing the fight choreography??
