Australia’s state and territory capital cities have younger populations than the rest of state. The percentages of capital city populations in the young adult ages are notably higher. International migration into the capital cities is a major reason.

In contrast to national and global trends, the Total Fertility Rate for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women has generally increased since 2016. For 2023 it was estimated at 2.17.

The general increase in the Total Fertility Rate of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women since 2016 is due to increases in fertility rates for women aged 25-49. Teenage fertility has continued to fall. The post-2016 TFR rise may be seen as a 'tempo effect'.
