The evacuation began with my middle daughter’s cabin between 2 and 2:30 am. The evacuation warning from officials did not come until 4. No matter your party, please insist on funding the NWS, NOAA and FEMA. Lives can be saved with early detection and rapid response.

Walked in our door around 12:30 last night. Incredibly happy to see and hold our beautiful girls. A happy but very sorrowful reunion. Let them sleep in as long as possible and have been listening to their stories all piled together on the bed. So grateful to be home together.

Next we will go help sift through belongings over the next few days. That is going to be impossibly hard for everyone. What makes America great is our inherent desire to help others and that has been felt from so many strangers. I can’t thank the vast majority of you enough.

Our girls were safe thank goodness. And in great hands. I have no doubt we will be facing trauma issues. My youngest was witness to friends floating away on mattresses and screaming coming from filled cabins. This was a freak event. It happened so fast.

The airlines told us there was nothing out of Nice not fully booked and, no, I cannot afford private. Hence the long shot ask if anyone is heading that way. Thankfully some tix opened up at 5 am after trying all night for that noon flight.

Not only do we have sets of grandparents, cousins and close family friends all nearby, Mystic is like family for my wife. She went there and knows the owners very well. While I was working on getting us home, she was helping initially contact parents whose kids were missing.

Yes, we sent our kids to camp and left on an anniversary trip for the two of us. My wife is also writing a book on WWII and the French Resistance, so it was an opportunity for her research and interviews without kids.

We are now in Newark waiting for delayed flight to Austin. Vast majority of comments have been so supportive and I can’t tell you how meaningful it is to see engaged, well-meaning, kind Americans only wanting to help one another. That said, I did want to clear up some things.

So many families in need of love and support. So many young friends, daughters and sisters lost. So many affected and in need of comfort and healing. The collective grace and love I’ve personally received on this platform has surprised and uplifted me. Thank you.

Hold your children close today and be thankful, grateful and humble. It’s so damn fragile.
