Often when restaurants close, I think ‘well, it was overpriced/not good food/strange menu/friends wouldn’t go there’. But not Leon, it was good. I’ll miss it. What terrible reflection on our economy & tax system.

Leon, which employs 1,120 staff, has grappled with falling sales recently and complained of a 'challenging' economy in its latest accounts.

Rachel Reeves is either deceitful or incompetent. Or both.

Latest absurd briefing coming out of No 10 tonight to save the Chancellor’s skin: OK so the OBR had told her she had a £4bn surplus rather than a black hole but that forecast had not factored in the cost of the winter fuel U-turn (£1.25 billion), the aborted £5 billion of welfare

I had high hopes and expectations for Rachel Reeves. She seemed capable and with integrity. Not any more. I don’t trust her anymore.

This will be a tough weekend for the Chancellor. She knew almost six weeks before the Budget from the OBR there was no ‘black hole’. Yet she and the Treasury still stoked up the idea that there was — and it would take big tax rises to fill it. By Oct 31 she knew from the OBR

BREAKING The OBR says it informed Rachel Reeves as far back as ***September 17*** that the downgrade in productivity forecasts was offset by 'increases in real wages and inflation'. The deficit was in fact just £2.5billion By October 31 that deficit had turned into net positive

Time and again Keir Starmer told us if we made him PM he’d kickstart growth and make UK fastest growing economy in G7 during the second half of the decade. He (and Reeves) have done the opposite. The last Tory Budget was March 2024 when the OBR forecast the economy would be 9%

A long post, but worth reading. Rachel Reeves is out of her depth. Economically and politically

After all the mayhem, the pre-budget briefings and Treasury hysteria about OBR growth downgrades, it turns out that if the chancellor had done precisely zilch yesterday, she would have almost met her main fiscal target, to generate a surplus on day-to-day spending. The miss

Labour doesn’t get the best way to help most people out of poverty is to get them into well paid jobs. Create the environment for new jobs and stop benefits being so easy. #Budget2025

Over the next five years, the OBR is forecasting that welfare spending will rise by £73.2bn to £406.2bn.

Does any other country change it’s tax code so often? So many changes to what is taxable and by how much. Keeps some economists and tax advisors in jobs, but any other benefits? Rachel Reeves will freeze fuel duty to dodge ‘political suicide’ https://t.co/yVHJFu3bR8

A lifestyle choice. I know people on ESa who could do a paid job. They are doing cash work and/or other activities which have same mental/physical reqs as a job. “One million more people claim benefits without need to look for job” https://t.co/nmFkbQuOuZ #Budget2025

When are Rachel Reeves and Kier Starmer going to recognise her approach isn’t working? She was elected on a promise of economic growth and she is failing. All the excuses (Brexit, Ukraine) were known pre-election and should have been factored in the plan.

More bad news for CX ahead of Budget. A year on from CX’s massive NI hike on employers in her 1st Budget, UK unemployment rate is at its highest since the height of the pandemic. Rate rose to 5% in the 3mths to Sept. Unemployment 3 stood at 4.1% when Lab took office last year.
